私は、尊敬している人は？と聞かれたら「星野道夫！」と答えてしまうほど彼が好きです。
彼の撮る写真は驚きと独特の美しさと、今でいう「癒し」的なものを持っているし、彼の詩的な感覚と文章は
写真同様に美しく、日頃ちょっと恥ずかしくて言えないような温かい言葉を代弁してくれます。
未だに非業の死を遂げてしまったことが悔やまれます。

しかし、この本は写真が少なく、また1つの話題が見開き１、２ページで終わる超短編随筆集です。
日常、星野道夫自身が思っていたことを思いつくままに書き留めたものなのでしょう。
氏の死後、未発表の遺稿を集めた本、ということなので、とにかく彼の文章に触れたい、というファン向けの本だと思います。

そのため、星野道夫の本を何冊も読んでいる人は大きく共感できるだろうし、一方であまり星野道夫のことを
知らない人が読んだら話が短くやや抽象的である分共感できず退屈してしまうかもしれません。
だから、星野道夫をあまり知らない、という人が読むのはあまりお勧めできません。
そういう方は写真の多い「Northern Dreams」のシリーズや文章の多い「ノーザンライツ」「光と風」「イニュニック」
などから読んだほうが氏の素晴らしさを味わえると思います。カリブーの群れの写真などもこのサイズ・この紙質で見ると
ドキドキの迫力が味わえない・・・。

星野道夫をよく知っている、という人は、さあ、少しでも彼の温かな眼差しに触れてほっ、と息をつきましょう、そういう感じです。

星野さんの本はとても好きです。
なぜならまるで宝石のようにキラキラとした言葉が溢れているからです。

「ニーズ（本当に必要なもの）とディザイア（欲しいもの）はずいぶん離れているものだと思う」
「寒さが人の気持ちを暖かくする。遠く離れていることが、人と人の心を近づけるんだ」

ほかにもたくさんの言葉があります。

一つ一つの言葉がしんみりと自分の中に染込んでいく感覚を感じてください。

装丁がとってもよかったので思わず読みはじめました。

星野さんの周りを取り囲む「自然」「人間」「動物」「植物」
すべてのものとのあたたかい交わりが、ゆっくりゆっくりと私の心を溶かしていきました。

この宇宙の中でのひとつひとつの出会い、そして今そこにあるそのままのもの、がとても大切なことなんだと感じられる。。そんなやさしさと強さを持った素敵な本です。
