何度、この本を読み返しただろう。初めて読んだのは高校生の時だったと思う。息のつく間もない生活を余儀なくされる東京で思春期を迎えていた僕は、星野さんの言葉に出合って救われた思いがした。写真もそうだけれど、星野さんの文章も優しい。しかし、それは甘やかすような優しさではない。自然の優しさがそうであるように、強さをも内包した優しさなのだと思う。この本にはいくつもの心温まる物語が収録されている。そして、それらの物語に加え、いくつもの素敵な言葉がさらなる彩りを添えている。

例えば、、、
「ぼくたちが毎日を生きている同じ瞬間、もうひとつの時間が、確実に、ゆったりと流れている。日々の暮らしの中で、心の片隅にそのことを意識できるかどうか、それは天と地の差ほど大きい。」

「私たちが生きることができるのは、過去でもなく未来でもなく、ただ今しかないのだと。」

忙しい生活を送っている人にこそ、この本を手にしてほしい。慌ただしい生活に身を任せていては感じ取れない「もうひとつの時間」が例外なく全ての人の心の奥底に流れている。星野さんの言葉が、忙しい生活で固まってしまった僕らの心を解きほぐすきっかけを与えてくれる。

その写真が有名な星野道夫さんですが、彼の文章には読む者の魂を、ここではないどこか遠いところへ連れて行ってくれる深い味わいがあります。 なかでも、この「旅をする木」は、私が会社を辞めて、その道筋をたどってカナダや南東アラスカを旅したこともあって、自分にとってのバイブル性が高められています。

写真は１枚も掲載されていません。しかし、それがゆえに、本の中で語られている星野さんを取り巻く世界は、それがたとえ現実の世界の話でも、何か不思議なアラスカのおとぎ話に思えてくるほどです。実際、僕らの短い人生のなかで本当に大切なことは、目に見えない世界に、愛情に満ちた想像力を持ち続けることなのでしょう。そんなことを感じさせてくれる本です。 巻末にある池澤夏樹さんの文章も、必読です。

星野氏はすでになくなっているのだが
どの一冊をみても、やさしい人なんだなーと感じる。
凶暴な想像もできない死に方をしていると
知っていても、まだエスキモーみたいにニッコリとして
でてくるのではないかとおもってしまう。

　作品はどれも形見だとおもえてしまう。
冷静なわたしでも生きていてくれたらなーと
こころが疼く、作者のやさしさと目線のするどさが
あいまう本である。一冊は彼の本を読んで見てくれたまえ!!
　生きていることがどんなにすばらしいかをおしえてくれるよ。
