昔、何年前だったか忘れたが、この作品を読みました。
理由は「ジャック・ザ・リッパー」に興味があったから。
犯罪史上でも有名な理由が不明な大量連続殺人。
読後、呆然としてしまった。そうか･･･そういう解釈もありか？！
さすが島田先生。多分世界でも初めての解釈だろう。
もちろん、これは小説の世界だが、実際に世界中に「切り裂きジャック」を
研究している人間は沢山いる。リッパロロジストというらしいが。
日本の第一人者は仁賀克雄氏。仁賀氏の「ロンドンの恐怖」という作品に、
島田先生が解説を書かれており、この本がもとになって、
この「切り裂きジャック・百年の孤独」が書かれたと書いてあった。
ちなみに最後の犠牲者メアリー・ケリーの写真が残っている。
これは正直見られない方が良いと思うくらい、残虐な殺害の仕方である。
しばらく食欲がなくなった。しかし、その殺人の仕方からこの本の斬新な
解釈が見えるとも思える。
とにかく面白い！

久しぶりの島田荘司。相変わらずの力技大技で、プリンセステンコーのマジックを彷彿とさせる。

有名な切り裂きジャックの犯人当てを島田的に処理するとこうなるって話なんだけど、その着想自体がおもしろい。

百年後に切り裂きジャックとまったく同じような犯罪が起こり、現代の犯罪を解決するのに百年前の犯罪を一緒に解決してしまう。強引だ。

強引な設定なため、無理なこと（百年前とまったく同じ落書きや犯人が捕まるときに百年前のファッションで現れるなど）頻発なのだが、それもまた「けったいな味付け」の中に紛れてしまって気にならない、と言うまさに力技。

しかも、謎解き係のクリーン・ミステリと名乗る真紅のフロックコートを着たサンタクロースもどきの人物は、どうやら御手洗らしい。ま、ファン向けの隠しネタってことなんだろうが、別に、突拍子もないことをいきなり言い出す明るい変人キャラばかり産出していると言われても納得するのだった。

しかし、言われてみれば、「腹裂いたのは、腹の中のものを探すため」って、当然と言えばあまりに当然な話で、百年前のロンドンでその動機を探らなかったとしたら、そっちの方が不思議な気もする。
あまり史実に興味はないので、実録切り裂きジャックを読む機会はないと思うけど、実際もシャーロック・ホームズ的捜査だったとすれば気づかなかった可能性もあるかな。

島田荘司はこれくらいの長さの方がいいな。

1888年に起きた、かの有名な猟奇的連続殺人事件、切り裂きジャック事件をモチーフにした作品。
切り裂きジャックの正体をオリジナルの視点で解き明かす一方、1988年にドイツでこれに類似した事件が起きるという設定。
まず、1888年という時代の霧のたちこめたロンドンという舞台がとても魅力的。
リアルでありながら幻想的で妖しげな雰囲気を文体から感じることができ、わくわくして読んだ。
貧困層の生活を克明に描き出しているのだが、読むものにその生活の悲惨さ、すえたような匂いが漂ってくるようだった。
二つの時代の、娼婦という同じ職業に焦点をあてて、底辺に生きる者の時代を超えた共通項に、何とも言えない気持ちにさせられる。

ストーリーは、1888年の事件への解決にやや強引な部分を感じた。
特に切り裂きジャックの残したチョークで書かれたある落書きに対する解釈は、ちょっとご都合主義的ではないかと思う。
動機や、犯人の狂気についてもっとページをさいてじっくり掘り下げてほしかった。
島田さんの描く狂気といえば、個人的には「アトポス」で描かれる女吸血鬼の印象が強烈だが、
あのくらい狂気に陥るまでの描写を丁寧にされていれば、もっと説得力があったろうと思う。

しかし、事件を解決する謎の人物とやらが、我らが名探偵の変装であると思わせる部分など、
シャーロックホームズを彷彿とさせて作者の遊び心を感じる。
本格ミステリというよりも、霧のロンドン、妖しげな猟期殺人、謎の老人という設定、
ホームズや怪盗ルパンをドキドキしながら読んでいたころを思い出させるような、物語的な世界観を存分に楽しめる一冊だと思う。
が、もちろん扱っているのは血にまみれた殺人事件な訳で、決して子どもにおすすめできるミステリではないのだが。
