昭和23(1948)年、名古屋市に生れる。早稲田大学政経学部卒業。52年「変調二人羽織」で幻影城新人賞、56年「戻り川心中」で日本推理作家協会賞、59年『宵待草夜情』で吉川英治文学新人賞、同年『恋文』で第91回直木賞をそれぞれ受賞。平成8年には『隠れ菊』で柴田錬三郎賞を受賞した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ミステリーのジャンルに「日常の謎」というのがありますが、
これは日常の謎・大人の恋バージョンと言えるものかもしれません。
なぜ、若い男が通りすがりの中年の女性にバラの花束を渡したのか。
夫の愛人と仲良くなろうとする妻の、本当の目的は何なのか。等々。

１２の物語は、日常でありがちなシーンで静かに始まり
意外な展開を経て、人の心の深さや危うさをあらわにします。
どれも短いストーリーなのに、スリリングで読み応えがありました。

ずっと昔、「恋文」を読んで「けっ！」と思って以来、
連城氏の小説は避けていたのですが、
本書を読んで、かつての自分はこの人の小説を読むにはあまりにもガキで
描かれていることを理解できなかったのだ・・・と痛感しました。

というわけで、酸いも甘いもかみ分けた大人にお勧めの短編集です。

男女の機微を中心とした叙情性溢れる作風と本格の味を融合させる稀有な力量を持つ連城氏の短編集。私は「夜よ鼠たちのために」のような作品を期待したのだが、そのような冴えは感じられず、無理と強引が目立つ作品となった。

作品数が十二と多いので仕方がない面もあるが、短い頁数の中で結末の意外性を出そうとして、登場人物間の関係や言動が不自然過ぎる。冒頭の「夏の最後の薔薇」に出て来る青年の身の上が女性の言う通りだとしたら、青年の打った芝居は常軌を逸している。「罪な夫婦」において居酒屋で雨女に出会った木村が店に通い続けたのも常軌を逸している。タイトル作「嘘は罪」の二人の中年女性の関係も女子高校生レベルだろう。登場人物の特異性に依存しては作者の負けである。意外性と作者の手前勝手な偶然性とを混同している。ところで「満天の星」に"ピエロ"が登場するのは岡村孝子の影響なのか ? 五編目辺りから同じパターンの繰り返しで飽きが来る。二組の男女の組み合わせには限りがあるから当然なのだが。「仮橋」、「走り雨」は病気を道具にした卑怯な作品。意識的かもしれないが、各編の題名に同じような字句を用いているのもセンスがない。更に気になるのは、各作の主人公を全て中年女性に統一している点である。この世代の女性が一番心に闇を抱えていると言う事か。夫の浮気、子の親離れ、自身の不倫、過去の失恋、同性との角逐。それを利用したのなら安易過ぎると言われても仕方あるまい。

ミステリの世界では男女の仲は「万能接着剤」と言って嫌われる。どんな動機も共謀も可能にする"禁断の実"だからである。作者はこの"禁断の実"を扱う名手なのだが、本作では扱いを失敗したようだ。
