作者のデビュー作「変調二人羽織」は本格物の短編集。その後、叙情派作家としての地位を確立していったが、一方で人間の心の襞を突いた心理トリック物の短編も書いていた。本作はそんな経験を活かし、男女の機微の描写を表面に出しながら、大きな仕掛けに挑んだもの。

冒頭で何人かの特殊な障害を持つ患者の描写が断片的に出て来る。これが最後で活きて来るのだが、結末まで因果関係は分からない。続いて本題に入り、男女四人が織り成す人間模様と一見解決不能な犯罪が描かれる。戸惑いながら読み進めると、結末には目くるめく真相が待っているという趣向。

人間模様の精緻な描写と言う作者の持ち味はそのままに、アクロバティックな技巧で読む者を驚かせる傑作ミステリ。

直木賞受賞作「恋文」で筆者を知り、それをこの作品に期待する人は合わないかもしれません。もともとミステリ作家だった（今でもミステリ作品を書いていますが）筆者のデビュー当時の作品を再版したものです。狂気がこの作品のテーマとなっているのですがその描写にハラハラしながらも引き込まれてゆきます。途中まで読むと「ホラー?」と思われますが驚きの合理的解決の後に、至って現実的な世界が現れる…人間の欲望や闇は果てることはないのでしょうか?

連城三紀彦の初の長編作品です。ネタばれをせずに紹介することのとても難しい作品なのですが、冒頭で提示されるいくつかの謎がとびきり魅力的です。夫の浮気現場に遭遇した妻が、浮気の相手が自分自身であることを知るという謎。ある男が自殺しようとトラックに飛び込んだところ、そのトラックが消失してしまったという謎。葬儀屋の男性が妻から「あなたは死んだ」と告げられるという謎。途中まで読み進めると、そういう設定にしちゃったらどんな謎でも出せちゃうじゃないかとちょっとがっかりするのですが、最後でそれらの謎がきちんとした“推理小説的な謎”であることが判明することには大いに驚きました。

犯人の行動がリスクが高すぎるなど、欠点を挙げればきりがないのですが、それを割り引いて考えても作者の読者を楽しませようとする心意気が嬉しいです。この作者の得意とする、人間心理の恐ろしさに対する描写の巧みさも初長編にして既に十分に発揮されています。
