江藤淳の日本語の美しさと、西郷の最期の美しさが見事に結晶した傑作。

江藤氏が最期に到達した地点は、滅亡の賦をどう唄うか、という問題意識に尽きる。それは西郷であり、大和魂や日本文学や日本そのものの滅亡の賦である。西郷はまさに全的滅亡のために幕末を生きたような男であり、戦後の閉塞と不在を、滅びに向かって生き抜いた江藤淳の人生もそれになぞらえ得るかもしれない。

洋行帰りの合理主義者が何人も薩群に参加していた。西南戦争は決して田舎の士族と近代国家との戦いではなかったのである。
保田與重郎の西郷論とも重なって読める。桶谷秀昭の『草花の匂ふ国家』ともあわせて読むとよいだろう。

西郷の滅びに仮託しているが、著者の様々な著書に書かれた「今」つまり戦後日本のありようが、米国の占領とその時期の検閲によって本来の日本的なものが、「軍国主義日本」という米国のプロパガンダ・徹底的な広告宣伝活動によって完膚なきまでに潰され、根無し草かつ「日米同盟」とまで言いきる一国の代表を生み出すところまでいきつくことを見通したような著作だ。
安保条約は、決して同盟ではないし、米国は日本国内に無差別爆撃を行なった国であるし、広島・長崎に必要の無い原爆を投下した国であり、当時も今も国際関係の中で認められていない「平和に対する罪」で東京裁判を行なった国であり、その責任など全く反省も無いし、いまだ正義と思っている。

倒れた西郷は、独立・自尊を目指した＝大東亜戦争を戦った日本の姿そのものだと深い意味で言っているのだと私は思う。

この本は、西郷さん関連の知識がない人にとっては、ちょっと内容を理解するのが難しいでしょう。私自身は、西郷さん関連の本を多く読んでいたので、すんなりと入っていけましたが。

まあ、内容的には、今までの西郷さん関連の本に書かれていた事実に、江藤氏なりの考え（非常に叙事詩的）をちょっと付けただけかなー？？という感じですね。やはり、司馬さんの本を先に読んじゃうと、物足りなさを感じてしまいました。

西郷さんに関しては、何故西南戦争を起こしたか？という題材で、西郷さんの心情を解きほぐす事は、後世の作家にとっては、ほとんど無理だと思います。
