海外旅行に備えて受けた検診で、思いがけず腎臓に腫瘍を発見。手術後も精力的に手作りの海外旅行を続ける著者が、奥様との32日間イタリア周遊の旅を旅行記にまとめてます。

日頃から、語学の勉強、足腰を鍛える体力作り、旅先に関する文化、歴史、地理などの事前研究、あくなき努力の結果、充実した“宝物のような旅”を自分のものにされています。ここに書くとこれから読まれる方の楽しみを奪うことになるので控えますが、結構ハプニングもあって、愉快でドラマチックな旅行記ですよ。

若手の女性著者の旅行記などと比べて、バックボーンの深さを感じさせる、知的で格調高い文章が素敵でした。“熟年”なんてとんでもないです。

ツァー経験しかない私に個人旅行を目指そうという気にさせてくれた本です。熟年という言葉がタイトルの一部には なっていますが、30代の私が感心するほどの行動力でイタリアを横断して行かれます。

私がこの本を手にとって、この春２年ごしの夢であったイタリア旅行を実現しました。高田氏の本を携えていったのはいうまでもありません。何の気なしに入ったレストランが氏お気に入りの店だったという偶然に感激したり、歴史の見方に抱く感想になるほどと頷いたり。 ガイドブックより役に立った一冊です。
