吉田 満
大正12(1923)年、東京生れ。昭和18年、東京大学法学部在学中に学徒出陣。第4期予備学生として戦艦大和に乗り組み、沖縄特攻作戦に参加、九死に一生を得た。著書『戦艦大和ノ最期』はベストセラーとなり、今なお若い世代に読み継がれている。戦後は日本銀行監事。昭和54年、死去

昭和17(1942)年、静岡県生れ。法政大学法学部卒業。『高松宮日記』(中央公論社)の編纂に関する調査に従事、『文芸春秋』昭和55年5月号掲載の「暗号名ウルトラ 山本長官機を撃墜す」は、現在米国立公文書館に所蔵の米軍極秘資料「Yamamoto shootdown」ファイルの中に英訳され収録(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

戦艦大和生存者の証言と日米の保存資料を元に、その特攻作戦の経過詳細記録を「作戦準備」「作戦発動」「米攻撃隊来襲」「戦艦大和沈む」「戦いのあとに」の５項目に整理し纏めた書である。その記録には取材した人名や起きた時間が明示され、作者の主観を排除している。記録内容は事実を淡々と記載するに留め、小説に見られる読み手への配慮は薄い。本書の記載内容は、「時間」「事象」「証言者」を軸としたデータベースともなり、本書を元に多方面から本特攻作戦を整理することが出来る。
作者は乗員生還者の一人であり、記録を淡々と記録する中にも、戦艦大和内での戦闘の様子が生々しく描かれている箇所が随所にあり、「米攻撃隊来襲」「戦艦大和沈む」の項では「ヒロシマノート」の情景を思い起させる。

大和の沖縄特攻の決定から沈没、その後についてを描いています。
タイトルの「ドキュメント」という言葉に何となく違和感を覚えて、「そのうち読む本」の中に放置していたのですが、まさにドキュメントでした。つまり日米の兵士の報告や証言を集め、時系列に並べており、著者の主観を極力控えているからです。
そのため人によって事実の認識が異なるのですが、食い違いを指摘した上で、そのまま掲載しています。生き残った日本兵の証言も様々な本、雑誌、新聞などから集められ、その場にいた人の証言は生々しく、その場の事実は真実といえるでしょう。
P.260には様々な証言で得られた大和の被弾位置を示した図があります。読み進む際にはこの図があると理解しやすいと思います。

なぜ大和が建艦され、なぜ沖縄特攻という愚行が実施されたのか？
それはなぜ太平洋戦争が始まり、なぜ敗れたのかという問いの答えにもなっている。
特に最前線で闘う兵ではなく、安全な場所にいる者達から威勢の好い意見が出てくるのか？
今でも日本の社会のあちこちで見られる風景である。そして、その結果について、それを決めた人間達は責任逃れをする。
これを読めば「戦艦大和」は米軍に沈められたのではなく、日本帝国海軍に沈められてと思うだろう。
陸軍が愚かだったことは周知の事だが、海軍も愚かだった事を証明してくれる作品。
そして、日本人が全員愚かだという事が分る作品。決して６０年前の事ではなく、今の日本人も愚かだという事を教えてくれる一冊。
