流転の海に出てくる熊吾が現代に生きていれば、こんな感じかもしれないと思った。熊吾に憧れる私からすれば、10数年後になりたい人物像そのものとも言える存在の50代会社社長をはじめ、魅力ある人物が次々と現れる。それら登場人物の織り成すドラマに、いつもならすーっと惹きこまれるのだが、どうも偶然が多すぎるのが気になってしまった。
しかしそれでも、文章の端々に散りばめられている宮本輝さんならではの、感受性豊かな視点・表現は疲れた気持ちを癒してくれるし、ストーリーの展開は飽きさせるものではなく、十分に楽しめる。そして、やはり自分の生き方を反省させられた。
上巻を読み終わったとき、「ホント、下巻を一緒に買っていて良かった」という気持ちになりました。これから買う方は上下セットでどうぞ。

待ち時間にちょっと読もうと購入しましたが、あまりの面白さに宮本輝の世界に引き込まれ、2日間で上下巻読んでしまいました。彼の作品を読むのは久しぶりでしたが、改めてその力量に感服させられました。全編を通して、登場人物が「まっとうな生きている」ことに安堵感を覚え、彼が憂えている「日本の国の民度の低下」に共感し、自分も日々誠実に生きなければならないと強く思いました。小説をもっと読もうと思わされた極上の作品です。

宮本輝は男女間の恋愛を書くけれど、書くのではなく描いている。恋愛はその人の一部分で、恋愛そのものに主眼をおいていない。まず人間ありきのスタンスが良い。

人は何かのきっかけで自分の来たした人生を振り返り、満足と後悔を感じ、これからの自分の対して「かくありたい」と望むものだ。”人生の転機”をこの本は語っているように感じた。人生の転機はいつ訪れるかわからない。２０代には２０代のその人なりの、６０代には６０代のその人なりの転機がある。作中に出てくる”飛行蜘蛛”はそんな人間の心の心細さと潔さを表している。


「約束の冬」では徒然草の第百五十段が引用されている。これが人生の転機に何かを示唆しているような気がした。

　能をつかんとする人、「よくせざらんほどは、なまじひに人に知られじ。うちうちよく習ひ得て、さし出でたらんこそ、いと心にくからめ」と常に言ふめれど、かく言ふ人、一芸も習ひ得ることなし。
　未だ堅固かたほなるより、上手の中に交りて、毀り笑はるるにも恥ぢず、つれなく過ぎて嗜む人、天性、その骨なけれども、道になづまず、濫りにせずして、年を送れば、堪能の嗜まざるよりは、終に上手の位に至り、徳たけ、人に許されて、双なき名を得る事なり。
　天下のものの上手といへども、始めは、不堪の聞えもあり、無下の瑕瑾もありき。されども、その人、道の掟正しく、これを重くして、放埒せざれば、世の博士にて、万人の師となる事、諸道変るべからず。

つまり、
これから何か芸事を習おうとする人がよく言うのに
「うまくできないうちは人に見られるとみっともないので、人に知られないようにひそかに練習し、うまくできるようになってから人前で披露するのが良いと思う。」
そんなことを言う人は、ひとつも芸を習得できることはできない。

宮本作品の面白さのひとつに、文中に差し込まれるこうした引用文がある。十年後の自分に思いをはせながら、主人公の気持ちになって読んでみた。
