文革が始まったころ学生だった私は、出版時、タイトルを見ただけですぐ買った。上･下巻まとめたレビューとする。毛沢東とはどんな人物だったのか。文革とはなんだったのか。中国という国はどういう国なのか。社会主義を「正義」とした幻想がまだまだ支配的だったこともあり、当時は理解できなかった。この本ですべてが解明されるわけではないが、著者は20年以上心ならずも毛沢東の主治医をつとめ、この「偉人」を間近に見たその秘話は当時刺激的で、面白く、納得できるもので一気に読んだ。偉人の私生活における実像は好色、不潔で、公的にはやはり権力の亡者だった。文革は自分の失政により失った権力回復の手段であり、4人組はその傀儡でしかない。多くの秘話はそれを裏付ける。毛沢東は建国までは優れた革命家であり、指導者だった。しかし、革命後は、共産党の主席というより、毛王朝の皇帝として理解したほうがよい。この本に描かれているさまざまなエピソードもそう考えれば理解しやすい。毛沢東は結局、科学や経済を理解できなかった人だ。文革で中国は間違いなく、中国の歴史をまちがいなく20年停滞させた。毛沢東批判は、中国では依然タブーに近いが、この本は単に過去における中国の裏面史というだけなく、改革解放後の中国を理解するためにも有効な本だろう。ある学習会で聴いた中国史が専門の先生から聞いた話が忘れられない。「中国という国は歴史的に存在したことはない。あるのは地理的概念だけ。三国志の時代となんら変わっていない」。たしかに、経済躍進後の中国の言動にはやはり普遍的な「中華思想」を感じる。

おそらく最も有名な中国人のひとり、毛沢東の私生活をその主治医である李博士が記した作品。純粋な意味での私生活はもちろん、その政治的なしがらみについても多く記述されていて、真実だとすると（信憑性はかなり高そうだと思いますが）、かなり価値のあるノンフィクションだと思います。お奨めです。猜疑心が強く癇癪もちの性格、不眠症、性生活、江青夫人や高官たちとの確執、ソ連への反感と独自の東洋的思想など、実際にその場にいたものしか判りえないような臨場感で綴られています。しかし．．．、２０世紀後半になおこうした世界があったとは、単純に驚きです。古代中国の宮廷にまつわるドラマそのままです。

２２年間、今の中国を作った毛沢東の主治医を勤めた人が、その人のことを書いた本です。

『ワイルドスワン』『マオ』と読んでから、著書を読んだ。結論から言えば、毛沢東のことを一番描ききっているのは、本著であることは間違いなかろう。何しろ、毛沢東と２２年間一緒に、と言って言いぐらい過ごしてきた人間が書いた本なのであるのだから。『マオ』はかなりこの著書を参考にしているのだろう。

毛沢東の酷さはいろいろ言われてきているからそれは他に任せるとして、何故、こういった人間が育ってしまったのだろうということを考えたい。日本であれば暗殺なりしているのでは。悪政を行うものを助長してしまう土壌があったのだろうか。こび、へつらい、自己保身。日本は、悪政に立ち向かい、潔く腹でも掻っ捌いていた人が今の我々を守ってくれているのかなと、しみじみ思う。
