クランシーの初期の作品ながら、ジャック・ライアン物でもなければオプ・センターでもネットフォースでもないので読んでいなかったが、購入。読んでみて驚いた。

ハイテク戦争の描写に関しては、他のどのクランシー作品よりも優れているかも知れないと言っても良いと思う。ここにはマンキューソ艦長やロビー・ジャクソン、ライアンやブレット・オーガスト大佐のようなスーパースター・ずば抜けて優れた人物が大勝利を収める、という胸のすくような戦争は出てこない。主人公たちは、初めて預かった艦を沈められて苦悶する米フリゲート艦の艦長や、大量の犠牲者を出しながらも進まぬ前線に苦しむNATO・ソビエトの両司令官、護衛してきた僚艦を、目的地目前で没められてしまう潜水艦長などであり、実際の「人の血の流れる」戦争の実体がここに描き切られている。

テクノロジーで勝るはずの西側のはずが、イージス艦は無敵ではなく、ファントムはソ連の超音速爆撃機に追いつけない。地上戦は拮抗し、機材と人員は湯水のごとく失われてしまう。勝敗を決定付けるのはテクノロジーではなく、人間と情報なのである...。現代の戦争を描いた作品では最高峰だと思う。とにかくショッピングカートへ入れよ！

何度読み直したかわからない…
ソ連軍とNATOの軍事的な衝突。
おそらく世の中に溢れかえるほど出版されたであろうし、
また私もたくさん読んだ｡
しかし、トムクランシーの書き込み方は2位以下など存在しないほど、緻密かつ豊かである｡

陸海空での多次元的な現代の戦争を大部隊の戦略的なレベルから小隊や分隊レベルの戦術、技術のみならず諜報、補給をきちんと考察し謀略、戦車、砲、戦闘機、爆撃機、攻撃型潜水艦、駆逐艦、空母、対艦ミサイルといったハードウェアも細部に至るまで正確に描写している｡

しかしトムクランシーの作品すべてに言えることだが彼のすごさはそのハードウェアの扱い方ではない｡本当にすばらしいのはそれを支える人間をきちんと書くことだ｡
それは敵方であるソ連軍同士でも変わらない｡他の安っぽい同種の作品と違い、クランシーはソ連軍の兵士や東ドイツの軍人にも同様に、名誉や誇り、苦悩や葛藤という人間を描き出している｡

イデオロギーを超え、誇りを持って祖国の軍服に身を包むすべての軍人に感謝と尊敬を抱くそんな作品である｡
何度読み直しても勉強になります｡

トム・クランシーのファンは多いと思う。小説は読んでなくても映画で見た人はさらにたくさんいるだろう。私は彼の作品の中ではこの本をベスト１に推す。

第３次世界大戦勃発という荒唐無稽になりがちなテーマを見事に料理している。さすがにソ連崩壊から何年も立った現在では多少古い感じは否めないが、舞台設定のうまさや緊迫感の作り方には感心する。未読の人、読んでみてください！
