　本書は著者の２作目にあたるとともに「妻と娘」シリーズの最初の作品である。　
　著者の処女作はベトナム戦争の終結であるサイゴン陥落迄の２週間を追った「サイゴンのいちばん長い日」である。著者は当時サンケイ新聞のサイゴン特派員としてこの作品を書いたのだが、そこにはベトナム国民（一般市民も軍人も政府高官も全て）の視点からみたベトナム戦争とサイゴン陥落が描かれている。
　著者はそのサイゴン駐在時にちょっとしたきっかけから娘連れのベトナム人女性と結婚をしている。そして戦争終結後３人は東京で暮らし始める。
　
　この作品では、日本人とは文化も考え方も違うベトナム人の妻娘との東京での日常生活の様子が描かれるとともに、ベトナム人の国民性、例えば食生活、親族との付き合い等が彼らの視線から描かれている。日本とベトナムの国民性あるいは文化の違いを知るのに恰好の作品ともなっている。
　著者が妻と娘を見つめる眼差しはとてもやさしい。ベトナムと日本に対しても同様である。すべてを受け入れる人物である。

　著者の文体は新聞記者出身のノンフィクション作家としては他の作家のそれとはチョット異なる。いい意味で小説的ともいえる情感豊かでユーモア溢れる文体である。この作品は彼の人柄と文体があわさることによって生まれた素晴らしい作品である。

著者は当時新聞記者であった。記事とは違う読み物としては書いてはいても、ユーモア溢れるエピソードのつながりの下に日本人に向けて、日本とは何かを問うジャーナリストの視点が存在する。
読者も彼になったつもりで、亜細亜それも儒教でもイスラムでもない世界から日本という国を見直して欲しい。

皇国史観でも唯物史観でもない目を持つ必要性は、この本が書かれた頃より少しも薄れてはいない。

彼は元々は日本に批判的でヨーロッパ志向の強い男だったらしい。それが何故、亜細亜の片隅から優しく日本をみる目をもつようになったのか。それは幾つもの破片の形で連作のなかで明かされてゆくので、できうれば続編も読み進めて欲しい。

尚、連作を読むと重なる時間のなかで、それぞれ違う出来事が書かれていて、それぞれのテーマからはずれたプライバシーを（家族を）守りながら書いていたことがわかる。

近藤紘一とは大学、産経の一時期、一緒だった。彼は４５歳でガンに倒れた。人間を見る優しい目。そしてたくまざるユーモア、この本を読むと、人はこんなに優しい面があるのか、ユーモアがどんなに日々の生活を和ませたくれるのかを、痛い程知らされる。遠い過去となったベトナム戦争の側面を知ることも出来る。
