　最近読んだ日本の医療関係の書物や漫画では、日本の医療の後進性や非合理性にフォーカスしたものが多かったが、実は日本の救急救命（いわゆるＥＲの世界）で世界に冠たる革新性・先進性を持った治療がなされているという話である。まさに、この林教授のようなカリスマが出ないと、日本の医療は変わらないのかなと思う。

　車で道を走っていると時に沿道に白い花が手向けられているシーンにぶつかる。日本で交通事故でなくなっている人は年間８０００人強である。

　日大医学部の研修医が交通事故に遭い生死をさまよっている際に、その父が「日大板橋病院の救命センターに凄い先生がいる」という息子の話を思い出し、息子を日大板橋病院に転送させて、そこで行われた脳低温治療によって従来助からないとされた領域から「生」の世界へ戻ってきたという話をＴＶ番組で見て大変感動したのが本書を手に取るきっかけである。

　本書では、ドラマチックな救命シーンが幾つも展開される。もちろん後遺症が残るケースもあるが、死ぬと思った家族にとっては助かることが最大の喜びであることがひしひしと伝わってきて涙せざるを得ない。

　しかし、このようなすばらしい治療もどこでも受けられるわけではない。デジタル・デバイドならぬ医療デバイドが生じているわけだ。従って、どこで交通事故に遭うかで生死が決まるという状況は今も続いている。このような状況を脱するため、先進国で現実のものとなりうるヘリコプターを利用した緊急移送を提言している。

　あと、この治療法の確立が臓器移植の議論に影響を及ぼすとの指摘は鋭い。　つまり、臓器移植を速やかに行うために、「死」とは何かが議論され、判定基準を「脳死」とする議論があるわけだが、たとえ脳波が止まっても脳細胞の一部が生きており蘇生される例があれば、本当にそれは死んだということにしてよいかという素朴な疑問が出てくるわけだ。

　とある新聞記事によれば、本書の主人公の林教授は日大を今年定年退官されたようだ（もったいない！）。是非、次の病院でも「革命」を起こして欲しいものだ。

著者の『犠牲（サクリファイス）』（文藝春秋）に予告されている、画期的な脳低温療法について、本書は全面的に扱っている。医療とは、人間を対象とした人間的な行為であることが、見事に描かれている。さらに、医療とは、医療者→患者という一方的交通関係で成り立つものではなく、医療者⇔患者＋家族（あるいはそれに準ずる関係者）との相関的な交通関係であることが、感動的に示されている。この本は、医療論を超えて「いのちとは何か」「人間とは何か」に迫る。著者には「文庫版へのあとがき」に触れている、「心臓死」からの蘇生という驚くべきコンセプトを導き出した林成之医師の新展開を追跡した作品を期待する。
