古きよきスタイルの本格小説。確固たる目的をもって生きる主人公ととりまく男たち。隅田川に映える人々の情感が丁寧に、鮮やかに描かれている。品格のある小説。

　ストーリーとしておもしろみに欠ける。確かに文章の品格とか主人公の心の襞の描写とか，はかない哀切な叙情風景とか、著者の円熟味を感じさせるところはある。でも、筋の展開がやや現実離れしていると思う。

　ただ、この本を読んで、日本古来の美意識を感じられたのはとても良かった。僕が学生時代に馴染みのある湯島や弥生町、浅草などの下町の風景が髣髴したのはとても懐かしかったし、それに加えて、今までなんとも思ったことのない「組紐」というものの芸術性に触れることが出来たのは殊のほかに嬉しかった。糸の染色の微妙さ、糸を編みこむ巧みさはなんて素敵なのだろう。「色香」という言葉の意味に触れたような気がした。

ところどころ、とても惹かれる場面があります。
女性の細かい機微の動きが表れているので、女性にお勧めな気がします。
10代のとき読んで、20代のとき読んで、やはり好きだったので、購入しました。
いつか主人公と同じ30代のときに読むのが楽しみです。
