1952(昭和27)年、長崎県佐世保市生まれ。武蔵野美術大学中退。大学在学中の76年に『限りなく透明に近いブルー』で群像新人文学賞、芥川賞を受賞。81年に『コインロッカー・ベイビーズ』で野間文芸新人賞、98年に『インザ・ミソスープ』で読売文学賞、2000年に『共生虫』で谷崎潤一郎賞、05年に『半島を出よ』で野間文芸賞、毎日出版文化賞を受ける(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　「こんなに楽しい小説を書くことはこの先もうないだろうと思いながら書いた」とあとがきで村上龍は書いている。確かに村上龍の作品の中では異質だ。私は「バカバカしい」小説だと思う。だが、この「バカバカしさ」こそが十代に限らず大人になってからも楽しい思い出を作るためには不可欠だ。

　また、「楽しく生きるためにはエネルギーがいる」とも書いている。権力の手先である教師や刑事を殴ってもこっちが損するだけで、唯一の復讐方法は人生を楽しく生きることだと。

　ただ、単純に私はこの本を読んで楽しくなった。理屈抜きの楽しさがこの小説にはあったからだ。

「限りなく透明に近いブルー」前夜、長崎での高校生活を描いた作品ですが、６９年という時代を反映してバリケードなんかが出てきます。若い読者にはやや不可解かもしれませんが、６０年代７０年代の学園もので熱気を描こうとすれば、良かれ悪しかれこういったアイテムは不可欠ですもんね(作者がそれらを小道具で用いたといってるわけではありません)。長崎弁のためか、東京を舞台にした小説や回顧録とはまた違った、すこしピントがずれつつも、「おれたちだって！」という地方のエネルギーにあふれた青春群像に、思わずいとおしい気持ちにさせられました。
