村上 龍
1952(昭和27)年、長崎県佐世保市生まれ。武蔵野美術大学中退。大学在学中の76年に『限りなく透明に近いブルー』で群像新人文学賞、芥川賞を受賞。81年に『コインロッカー・ベイビーズ』で野間文芸新人賞、98年に『インザ・ミソスープ』で読売文学賞、2000年に『共生虫』で谷崎潤一郎賞を受ける(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

希望は動き続けることの中に、そしてその中にだけ見つけられる。だから自分に見える光のほうに動きなさい。力強いメッセージを受け取れる小説集です。私は村上龍さんのあまり良い読者とはいえないのですが、「13歳のハローワーク」と並んで、本書は村上さんの代表作になるのではないかと思います（確かに良い読者ではないなあ）。あるいはこれは「43歳のためのハローワーク」とでも呼ぶべき本かもしれません。特に最後の「空港にて」は、今まで読んだ短編小説のベスト10には必ず入るようなものすごい出来です。確かに今までの「暗い」近代文学では、ああいう、それこそ光の射すような結末にはならなかったでしょうね。甘さのかけらもないひどくドライな小説なのですが、読後は心臓から新しい暖かい血が全身に行き渡るような充実感を覚えます。「駅前にて」もすばらしい。未読の方はぜひ手に取ってみてください。

あとがきにも書かれているが、希望がテーマとのこと。結末がはっきりしないところが好みの別れどころではないか。私はそれなりによい作品だと思い、☆4とした。希望を感じられる作品、そうでもない作品があったので最高点にはしていない。これも感じ方の違いだろう。

自分に近い存在にやはり共感しやすかった。私の場合、「公園にて」だ。なにげなく過ごしている日常を見直してみるきっかけになる作品かもしれない。一読する価値は大いにあると思う。

　文庫のみ出版なら、どこかにそう書いてあるよなー。でも、単行本から改題する場合もやっぱり背表紙に書いておくべきじゃ・・・・・というわけで、この本が「どこにでもある場所とどこにもいないわたし」の改題本であること（最終ぺージに表記あり）を知らずに買ってしまいました。

　何年かぶりに読み返すことになったこの本ですが、やっぱり厳しいことを書いている。そんなことをはっきり言ってしまうと、泣き出す人もいるんじゃないか、と思うくらい。

　でも、著者は冷たいからそんな冷酷なことを言えるんじゃない。
　「コインロッカーベイビーズ」あたりで既に「普通」というカテゴリーから完全に外れることが決定した著者が、わざわざそんなことを言う必要はない。　著者は、どうするべきか、を必死に考える機会をもたらしてくれている。気づかないうちに人生が「終わって」しまうことがどれほど怖いことかを、分からせてくれようとしている。

　心に刻むべき短編集。４００円くらいの損が何だ。
