良くも悪くもまとまりすぎ。
いろいろ実験しているのはわかるのだが、
筒井康隆に求めているのは、まっとうな狂気（というのも変だが）
である。
往年のパワーを求めると、この先生も歳をとったなぁ実感させられる。
残念。

「ロートレック荘事件」の結末で、思わず「ギャー！」と叫び、「そんなのありかよ筒井センセイ」と思いつつ星5つにしてしまった私にとって、はっきり言って今回の犯人は不満であり、トリックに関しても特に目新しいものは感じませんでした。論理的矛盾もなく、ある意味では正統派ミステリーとも言えます。しかし、はからずも他殺死体の第一発見者となってしまった中年作家の村田勘市が通りがかった主婦に弁明する場面から、いきなり筒井節が炸裂。文化人同士の会話、さらには自宅のバラの花を手折った女子高生を歯の浮いたような言葉でナンパする場面にいたっては、あの文学部唯野教授を彷彿とさせるものがありました。また主人公はもちろん、彼をとりまく人々がミステリーのなぞ解きをする過程において、クリスティが引用されたり、「オカルト的な自己完結」とか「循環形式の殺人事件」とか、新しい表現がされるのにも興味をひかれました。主人公は、つぎに殺されるのは自分だと思い、さらには周りの者すべてが犯人に思えてきて、雨と雷の音で更なる恐怖をつのらせますが、そんな中で被害者の形見分けでもらった被害者そっくりの人形「美都ちゃん」が加わることにより、さらに恐怖が増幅していきます。結局のところ、作者が真に描きたかったのは、題名通り「恐怖」であり、ハイデガーの恐れの分類を引用したり、恐怖こそは性衝動より以前から存在する根源的な本能だと言い切ることにより、その主張が明確になっています。正統派ミステリーとして読むも良し。メタミステリーとして読むも良し。ホラーとして読むも良し。という作品です。

　作者はこの作品で様々な恐怖を書いてみせている。まず文化人殺人事件という設定が効いている。言うまでもないが、これが頑強な肉体労働者などであれば恐怖は半減する。それだけでなく、文化人は自らものを考える。そこに、現実ではない部分からの恐怖も生まれてくるためにふくらみが出てくる。

　主人公の村田勘市は物語を通して連続した恐怖におそわれているが、恐怖の形は一様ではない。怖がりかたは腰を抜かすことに始まり、最後はケラケラと笑いながら発狂してしまう様子まで描かれている。対象も一つの出来事や一人の人間にとどまらず、果ては物にまで恐れを抱くようになっている。

　自分なりに推理し始め、そのリアルな想像力から生まれる恐怖はまさに作家という職業ならではのものであり、文化人が次々に殺されていくという様は滑稽でもあり、想像を絶する怖さもある。後半では恐怖の対象は人形や、雷・地震などの自然現象にまでひろがっていく。

　日頃は理性という鎧で固められているはずの文化人が、恐怖によって人間本来の弱さを露呈していく様子が丹念に描かれており、さすが筒井康隆の作品と納得させられる。
