　タイトル通り、1923年に起こった震災の模様をを克明に追ったノンフィクション。大烈震、火災の描写もさることながら、パニック後の異常心理から発生した朝鮮人虐殺……。被災後の混乱の模様も実に凄まじい。

　そろそろ80周年を迎える当節、東海地震の来襲がささやかれているのはご存知の通り。地震による災害には多少なりとも備えがあるだろうが、流言蜚語による人災は果たしてどうか？　Ｗ杯のフーリガンパニックを考えたら、ちょっと心配にもなるのだが。

　理学博士寺田寅彦は語ったという。「過去の人間が軽視したことが災害を大きくした原因であった」と。いずれは確実に襲い来る激震。物資の備えよりも何よりも、まずこちらの一読をおすすめしたい。

　関東大震災の前に、関東地方にはかなり大きな地震がしばしば起こっていたらしい。これを大地震の予兆と考える今村と、それを否定する大森。二人の地震学者は真っ向から対立した。物語は、この「権力争い」を中心に進んでいくのかと思いきや、大震災についての、事細かなレポートが展開する。
　「自分は関東大震災について知らなさすぎた」というのが、読後の感想である。
