記憶シリーズの三作目。物語は前回の二作品に比べ短いものばかりだが、より作品に深みが感じられるようになった。また、作品もホラーだけではなく、多様性を帯びてきた気がする。これも作者が練達したためか。そして、今回は悲しく切ない作品がいくつか収録されており、その中でも「水の記憶」と「愛の記憶」は絶品だ。どちらも亡き妻に関する作品であるが、読み手は必ずや涙するだろう、と私は言い切りたい。この二作品だけでも、星は５つつけるべきだと思う。

　高橋克彦の「記憶シリーズ」第三弾である。直木賞を受賞したのは第一弾の『緋い記憶』であるが、個人的には本書への思い入れが最も強い。理由は、高橋の最高傑作と言うよりも、日本語で書かれたホラー短篇における逸品とも言うべき名作「夢の記憶」が収録されているからである。
　主人公の「私」は夢の中で見聞きした出来事をノートに書き留め始める。人間の想像力は無限の可能性を持っているはずなのに、夢の中では他人になることも別の時代に行くこともできず、常に「私」でありせいぜい少年時代ぐらいまでしかさかのぼることができないこと、すなわち夢の素材はあくまでも経験であるらしいことを主人公は分析する。しかしその割には全く見覚えのない人物と出会ったり、見知らぬ土地が舞台になったりすることを主人公は不思議に思う。
　やがて主人公は、夢の中の登場人物や夢の舞台となる建物が何度もあらわれることに気づき始める。夢にはそれなりの一貫性があり、もう一つの世界を形成しているように見える。人間の脳はほんの一部しか使うことができないとよく言われるが、残った部分は夢の中のもう一つの世界の方に割り当てられているのではないだろうか。やがて主人公は現実よりも夢の中の世界の方に思いを寄せるようになってゆく。
　ここで場面は大きく変わる。それまでのノートの記述からズームアウトし、ノートを読んでいる二人が初めて登場する。一人はノートの書き手の妻であり、もう一人はノートの書き手の友人である（もう一人の）「私」である。ノートの書き手の「私」はすでに死んでおり、二人はノートに書かれた夢の内容について議論している。そして……。
　読み終えた瞬間「やられた」と思った。こういう哲学的なホラーを読みたい、できれば書きたいと思っていた。これ一作だけのためにも買う価値は充分あるが、他の作品も佳作ぞろいの優れた短篇集である。

この本を読んでずいぶん経つが、最近読み返して改めて感動することができた。
一話ずつゆっくりと読めば、なんだか切ない気持ちになる。
作者独自の世界に引き込まれてしまい、読んだ後もボーッとしてしまう。
ホラー短編と書いてあるが、決してホラー小説じゃなく愛の物語である。
