高橋様の本は、当たり外れがあると聞いた事があるのですが
本著は当たりです。引き込まれて一気に読めました。
読後感も爽やかです。元気をくれる作品です。
主人公の与力、仙波の気風の良さが痛快です。
お薦めです。

老中松平定信が、賄賂政治で町民までが賑わった田沼時代の弊害を払拭しようと躍起になっている寛政２年（１７９０年）、深川一帯が大嵐による高波に襲われる。そこに家のあった浮世絵師喜多川歌麿は出かけていて無事だったが、彼の妻が災難のドサクサに紛れて何者かに連れ去られてしまう。事件を追うは、南町奉行所の同心、その名前から千に一つの目こぼしもない千一と恐れられている仙波一之進。事件には何かとてつもない裏があるようで、上役から調査を止められる中、同心の役職どころか命まで懸けて事件の謎を追っていく。
持ち前の正義感で巨大な力を持つ相手に立ち向かっていく千一はじめ、その父親の左門、柳橋一の売れっ子芸者おこう、売れない浮世絵師の春朗（後の葛飾北斎）ら、ワキを固める登場人物たちも魅力的で、誰がなぜ歌麿の妻を連れ去ったのかという複雑に絡み合った謎もスッキリとまとまっていて良かったのですが、何よりも興味深かったのが、寛政の改革について。白河藩主の老中松平定信が断行した、質素倹約を旨とする改革で、一時は喜ばれるが、あまりに細かく厳しかったため次第に庶民の不満が募り、ついには松平定信が老中職を失脚する、と学校の授業で習うようなことは知っていましたが、本作には改革に対する庶民の不満の様子が書かれていて、なるほど、実際こんなだったのだろうとうなずかされることしきり。とてもおもしろく読めました。
庶民の楽しみが奪われていく暗い世相を背景に解き明かされていく大事件、力作です。

浮世絵の役者絵、美人画を見て綺麗だと思った事などがないが、ちょっと見てみたいと思うようになる作品。
不勉強なので寛政の改革は年表の暗記項目としてしか認識していないし、当然往時の市井人の楽しみなど考えてみたこともなかったが、これは面白い。なにより魅力的な食えないオヤジが大勢出てくる。

虚構の産である仙波が渋いのは主人公だからとしても、蔦屋、歌麿、春朗、美味しいトコ取りの初鹿野、池波作品より遥かにダーティーに描かれる鬼平すらカッコイイ。
体制VS反体制という単純な公式に当てはまらないところもイイ。
