事故を起こした作家。
それを保護した元看護婦。
いわゆる「密室劇」の恐怖が描かれます。
密室劇ではストーリー展開の制約があるため、そのディテールと
人物像が如何にリアルで緻密に掘り下げられるとともに、
広大さに拮抗するパワーを持てるかが成功の可否を握っているが、
「ミザリー」の完成度はとにかく高い。

映画化され、キャシー・ベイツの出色の演技が素晴らしかったですが、
「密室サイコ劇」としての完成度は小説の方が遥かに上回っています。
「ファイアスターター」と並ぶ、キング長編として、キングファン
のみならず多くの人に楽しんでもらえる作品です。
最後のシーンで僕は本当に主人公の作家に感情移入し、
「ほんとに良かった。助かったんだね！」
と興奮しつつ、少し涙ぐんでしまった。

幽霊よりも何よりも怖いのは人間だ。それも一つのことに凝り固まり、執着する人間ほど怖いものはない。ポールの書く「ミザリー」の熱狂的ファンだったアニー。彼女の異常なまでの精神は読んでいてぞっとする。ポールの痛みをひしひしと感じながら、果たして彼がこの状況からどのように脱出するのか、はらはらしながら読んだ。人間の心の奥底には、どれほどの恐ろしいものが秘められているのか、見事に描き出された作品だった。

キングのものはほぼすべて読んでいますが、この「ミザリー」はなかでも秀逸の傑作であると思います。作家キングが自らの生活からくる恐怖感をもとに、ファンという人物像を通じて人間のもつ愛惜を恐怖の世界で描ききっています。「感情ホラー」ですね。
