『鬼平犯科帳』は現代風に言うと、「刑事もの」の人気シリーズということになるだろうか。

この短編集の主役は、「鬼平」こと長谷川平蔵、幕府の火付盗賊改方という部署の長官である。何といっても、時代は江戸。風俗も人間の生き方も、現代とはまったく異なっている。それにも関わらず、私たちがこの小説に多くの共感を寄せるのは、今も昔も変わらない人間の営みが、ここに生き生きと描かれているからだろう。

江戸に跋扈する盗賊を、長谷川平蔵が、部下や密偵を使っていかに捕まえるか、というのがこの作品の主題である。ただし、この世界には盗賊にはっきりと２種類の区別があり、それぞれ「大盗賊」「小泥棒」などと呼びあらわされている。前者は「盗まれて難儀するものには手を出さず、殺さず、犯さず」を金科玉条とする、どこか憎みきれない盗賊。一方後者は、一家皆殺しの「急ぎ盗（ばたらき）」を基本とする、憎んでも憎みきれない盗賊である。捕らえた盗賊の処置は平蔵に一任されているのだが、浮世の機微に通じた彼の罪人に対する柔軟性に富んだ裁きも、この小説の見どころの一つとなっている。

おそらく、日本文学史上で、これほどの名台詞に溢れた小説は皆無でしょう。
若い頃に、『本所の鬼銕』と呼ばれた放蕩無頼の青春時代を過ごした平蔵が、悪を知っているからこそ、悪を取り締まれ、悪を知っているからこそ、悪を哀れむ。
……よく世界の人々が、「日本人ははっきりさせない」と、批判しますが、その人たちには是非とも鬼平を読んでほしい！
人間が善悪で判断できるほど、白黒はっきり出来るほど単純な存在なのか？
理不尽だからこそ、曖昧だからこそ人間なのだと。
曖昧な人間が白黒はっきりさせようとするから、善悪で判断しようとするから、間違いを犯すのだと。

池波正太郎がこだわった“粋”ということ。
主人公「鬼平」こと長谷川平蔵は粋である。
悪人に対しても時には鬼に時には仏にと、道理に適った処置をする。
『剣客商売』の秋山父子もそうだが、
物事の道理をわきまえた分別のある立ち回りが読者にとって実に快い。
個性的な脇役も多く登場し、この物語の世界は実に魅力的で粋である。
１巻を手にしたらもう最後。ハマること間違いなし！

文学的にみても、乱れた日本語が飛び交う現代において、
池波作品がいかに優れているかはいうまでもないだろう。
物の好き好きは人それぞれではあるが、
池波文学を味わうのに読者の程度は関係ない。
この価値が理解できない人達が果たしてインテリなのか？

『剣客シリーズ』と並び、池波正太郎のエッセンスが凝縮された、
永く読み継がれてほしい名作。老若男女問わず絶対お薦め！！！
