開高健はハードボイルドの人である。そうでない人にとって、うらやましくもあるが、同時に幾分うっとうしい。読み手に気力が充実していないと、彼の文章の重量と癖に辟易してしまうことになる。

本書は上下２巻からなる北米釣行紀であり、後半は南米版「もっと広く！」に続く。釣りの描写は難しく、天才・井伏鱒二でさえ最小限の文章しか残していないが、開高健はむしろ積極的に釣りを題材として用い、そして成功していると思う。もっとも、井伏のような繊細な釣りではなく、開高のはスポーツ・フィッシングであり、両者の間には著しい隔たりがある。

本書も、釣りに関する記述は冴えている。一方で、たとえばニューヨークの都市描写は、わざわざここで読みたい話題ではない。たとえて言えば、釣りに行ったのに名所見物ばかりしているような、そんなじれったさを感じる。そういう点では話題が釣りに集中している上巻の方が密度が高く、話題が外れがちな下巻にはやや散漫な印象がある。

写真は美しく迫力があり、文庫よりも大判で眺めたい。しかし、本来は名作であるはずの下巻148~149ページの写真を見て、私が瞬間的に思ったのは、なぜか「いい気なもんだ」というネガティヴな感想であった。どうしてだろう。ご満悦の表情に、嫉妬しているのだろうか。ハードボイルドとは無縁の私にとって、彼の生き方は、所詮は見果てぬ夢であると、十分知っているはずなのに。
