NHKのプロジェクトXという番組で、第一回目のテーマとなったのが富士山頂に「台風の砦」となる気象レーダーを建設するプロジェクトであった。厳しい気象条件の中のレーダー建設プロジェクトは、相当に困難なものであったのだが、メンバーの見事なチーム力で難題を次々と克服し、無事に竣工させた。

本書はそのプロジェクトを題材とした小説である。一部は脚色されている部分もあろうが、多くはそのプロジェクトの事実に基づくものであると推測される。この著者、新田次郎その人こそが、気象庁でこのレーダー建設プロジェクトを率いたリーダーなのだから。だから、本文からは、その時その時の緊張したやりとりがひしひしと伝わる。テレビでは伝わらない、そして伝えることができなかった人間ドラマをかいま見ることができる。番組を見て感動した人はもちろんのこと、そうではない人にもぜひ読んでいただきたい。

　２００４年から富士山の観測所が無人化された。このニュースを目にした時、やはり、新田次郎のこの作品を思い出してしまう。
　国家的プロジェクト。日本一の山。自然条件の困難、組織的軋轢。
　プロジェクトXの素材には格好の、富士山レーダー設置事業である。作者も気象庁関係者として富士山に関わっており、まさにこの本を書くのに最適の人物といえる。主人公も作家と役人を兼業している存在として形づくられている以上、そこに作者自身の投影を見るのは不自然ではない。
　たしかに、数多の困難を乗り越えて、プロジェクトは成功する。テレビ的にはそこで話が終わるのだろう。だが本書の真価はそんなところにあるのだろうか？
　主計官との予算を巡る攻防、内部での根回し、他部署との軋轢、そして突出した存在への風当たり。カタルシスをもって締めることを許さない、組織生活のリアルを作者はきちんと描いている。苦い読後感を持とうとも、読者はそれらを受け止めるべきなのだ。
　とくに本書１９８ページの会話ときたら！

昭和３９年、富士山頂のレーダードーム建設を描く小説。
新田次郎氏は長年の気象庁勤務の経験を持ち、実際にこの事業に深くかかわっている。
作中の中心人物である葛城章一は新田次郎氏本人がモデルであることは、言うまでもない。

落札に向けた業者間の争いや、権謀に満ちたお役所的体質など、
企業小説的な面白みもあるが、この小説の本質はやはり、
富士山に挑む男たちの真摯な姿にあると思う。
漆黒の闇に浮遊するようなレーダードームの幻想的な光景や、
富士の絶顛に吹き荒れる嵐の描写は、
さすが山岳小説（と言われるのを新田氏は嫌ったそうだが）の
大家と呼ばれる氏ならではの迫力を感じた。

一生に一度の大仕事。
生まれて来た以上は、そういうものを残したい。
そんな高揚感を与えてくれる一冊。
