井上 ひさし
昭和9年(1934)、山形県生まれ。上智大学外国語学部フランス語科卒。浅草フランス座文芸部兼進行係などを経て、戯曲「日本人のへそ」、NHK人形劇「ひょっこりひょうたん島」などを手がける。47年「手鎖心中」で直木賞受賞、54年「しみじみ日本・乃木大将」「小林一茶」で紀伊國屋演劇賞、翌年読売文学賞戯曲賞を受賞。56年「吉里吉里人」で日本SF大賞、翌年読売文学賞小説賞を受賞。平成11年、菊池寛賞受賞。平成16年、文化功労者(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

第二次大戦敗戦後の仙台を舞台にする青春小説。以前から読もう読もうと思っていたのだが、新装版が出たのを機にようやく完読。特に、第６章の松島小旅行の挿話では大笑させられた（久しぶりのカタルシス）。また、チョロ松校長の行動には、古き良き時代の理想的教育者の姿をみる。（エリート校だから許された点も大であろうが･･･）軽石先生の講話のシーン（１８４頁以下）も印象深し。私もこんな学校にいたかった。お勧めです。

背景などからみて、時は昭和３０年代だろうか？
新制の仙台の男子高校生の５人グループが、騒動の数々を巻き起こす。
この高校は、名門校らしいが、グループの成績は、全員下から数えた方が早い。

稔を筆頭に、グループの行動は、いかにもボンクラ高校生らしい。
東京からの転校生の俊介が、格好は付けているが、色々とボロが出る。

物語には「笑い」がぎっしりと詰まっている。
その笑いとは、直接的な意味のものから、深い意味のものまで多彩だ。
とにかく本書には、吹き出しそうになる場面が度々あり、電車の中などで読むには要注意だ。

幕切れ部分の校長の行動には、ちょっとしんみりとさせられる。

高校生らしい喜怒哀楽がぎっしりと詰まっている本書。
心の底から、笑わずには、いられない。

仲良し五人組はみな名門校にいるにも関わらず、やりたいことをやっていて、それを温かく見守る周囲の大人達の優しさが胸をうった。
笑いの要素が多いなかでちょいちょい出てくる感動的な場面が、面白さをより引き立てていた。
この作品は井上靖の「しろばんば」と並ぶ素晴らしい作品だった。
