江戸時代の儒学者、荻生徂徠（おぎゅうそらい）の学問の方法について
の論説が多くを占めています。

「徂徠が言うように、学問とは、物＝具体的事物に没入し、それと一体
になることによってしかなしえない。朱子学や唯物史観や構造主義など
のように、「理（＝理論＝理屈）」という色眼鏡で対象を見ても、対象
の正体は見えてこない。」
小林氏の言いたいことの中心を、私なりに要約すればこうなります。

ちなみにこの本は、35年ほど前から10回前後読んでいると思いますが、
その間徂徠を読み、伊藤仁斎を読み、江戸期儒学の解説書を読み、四書
（論語・孟子・大学・中庸）を読み、現代思想の諸書を読んで、何とか
上のように要約できるようになったのは最近のことです。

何と手間のかかる本でしょうか。

小林秀雄氏による随想。「モオツァルト」から「無常といふ事」まで、幅広いトピックをカバーしていた一巻にくらべ、この巻は、柳生徂徠と孔子の思想を中心に扱いながら、縦横無尽に思索を膨らませていく。

「私の書くものは随筆で、文字通り筆に随うまでの事で、物を書く前に、計画的に考えてみるという事を、私は、殆どした事がない。筆を動かしてみないと、考えは浮ばぬし、進展もしない・・・」と、本書で小林氏自身が書いていますが、まさにその通りで、どんどん展開していく氏の思索の流れを追うのに非常に骨が折れます。あるトピックについて語っていたかと思うと、まったく違うところに飛んでいて、全体として何を言いたいのかが伝わってこない、ある意味、非常に不親切な文章です。読んでいて、こちらの頭もぐるぐると回転し出すものの、文章自体から何か驚くようなものが直接的に得られる、という感じはないです。

加えて、柳生徂徠や孔子の思想に、読者が慣れ親しんでいることを前提として書かれているので、その意味でも、教養のない私にはややしんどいものがありました。

　考えるヒントとは単なる考え方の方法の提示ではない。まず考えよう、考えたいという意欲をよびおこすきっかけであるはずだ。この本の中で小林が深い共感をもって取り上げている近世の学者の思想が、いかに学問への強い憧れによって支えられているか。そして、それを語る小林の文章に、真にあるべき学問の姿への希求がどれほど満ちていることか。それを読む我々の中にも、「学び」への憧れが湧きあがってくる。

　中江藤樹も熊沢蕃山も仁斎も徂徠も、官製の学問ではなく、天地にひとりで生きてある己と一体となりうる学問を追求した。このわが国の思想の流れは宣長を経て、福沢諭吉にまでつながるものだ。小林による「学問のすすめ」として、強く推薦するしだいである。
