　　得てして巨悪の塊、冷酷な人物としての印象が強いように見受けられる大久保利通の、政治家としての能力の卓越、外交官としての胆力が見られる。中国との外交交渉において、国家元首かのように、超法規的活躍をみせるが、その交渉を成功裡に治めてしまった結果、国内の反政府分子の不満を増長させてしまった政治の難しさ。

　　外交官として、政治家として、国際政治にあたる者に不可欠な胆力を、大久保利通は保持していた。
　　西郷隆盛の親友、または敵としてでなく、有能な政治家としてもっと肯定的な評価を得てしかるべき人物である。

　第５巻の一番の出来事言えば、台湾出兵の事後処理のために北京に渡清した大久保が、賠償金５０万両を勝ち獲るまでです。
　大久保がどうやって交渉していくか、イギリス、アメリカ、ドイツなどのそれぞれの思惑などが読み取れるところはとても読み応えがあります。しかし、私が本巻で一番印象に残ったのは、ルソーの「自由民権論」が描かれている稿です。
　この稿を読んでいるとこの時代に「民権」を導入することがいかに難しいかがわかります。そして、「現在の日本は民権が確立しているのか」と思いました。

　歴史の深さを知ることができる「翔ぶが如く」もようやく半分です。第６巻もとても楽しみです。

この巻では、大久保利通による台湾出兵（不満武士のガス抜き）の
戦後処理についてと帰国後の自由民権運動をはじめとする、政情不安
について書かれています。大久保は自分でまいた台湾出兵という種を、
自ら北京に赴き李鴻章と折衝し、刈り取ります。会議の席上、梃子で
も動かない大変な粘り腰をみせます。このシーンは、圧巻です。また、
帰国後に岩倉・大久保の元勲政治による政情不安を取り除くため、
伊藤博文が木戸を再び政界に戻す説得シーンも見所があります。伊
藤博文といえば、昔の１０００円札の人としかイメージがありませ
んが、さすが紙幣になる人、それだけの行動と実績を残していまし
た。
