　全１０巻にわたり、近代国家として産声を上げたばかりの明治維新期ニッポンの姿を、若き舵取り役の群像を通して描く巨編です。
　当時、国を動かしていたのは、いずれも３０代から４０代の人たち。
　幕末の血なまぐさい時代を経て、世界に伍する国をどう作ってゆくのか。権力の座にある者も、また現状に満足しない者も、文字通り血の滲むような模索を続けていた時代。小説は、緻密な歴史考証と、フィクショナルな叙述を、作者一流の筆致で繰り広げ、現代日本にまで受け継がれた様々な功罪を惜しげもなくさらして余りあります。

明治6年10月に下野した西郷は鹿児島で隠遁生活を送っている。司法卿江藤新平も明け7年1月に佐賀に戻り、2月に反乱を起こす。大久保は、政府内の同情論を尻目に、江藤に対しさらし首という極刑をもって望む。同藩の黒田の殺人スキャンダルは揉み消したのに、である。

さらに西郷の征韓論を叩きつぶして半年もたたないうちに、台湾出兵を自ら主導した。このあたりはどうも、いきあたりばったりの観が否めない。やはり謎は多い。

　第四巻で象徴的な出来事としては、「佐賀の乱」と「征台論」があげられます。

　四巻を読んで感じたことは、時代を経ても人間の基礎は変わらないということ。

　「佐賀が立ち上がれば薩摩も立ち上がるだろう」、という希望的観測だけで乱をおこし、結局負けた江藤新平。「征韓論」には反対したのになぜか「征台論」を提唱した大久保利通、西郷従道。この二つの事件を読んでいると、歴史の奥深さを知ると共に、「どんな時代でも人間の基礎は変わらないな」と思わされます。

　四巻を読んで、「佐賀の乱」に興味を持った人は、同じく司馬遼太郎の「歳月」を読むことをお勧めします。第五巻以降もとても楽しみです。
