幕末に起こった暗殺や討ち入りなどを列伝形式で描いた短編集で、幕末の始まりとされる「桜田門外の変」から、鳥羽伏見後の「最後の攘夷志士」までの全12編が収められています。

通常暗殺者などは歴史上ほとんど評価されない存在だと思いますが、本作では彼らを主人公として扱い、そしてその生活や心理を細かく描写しているので、凶行に至るまでの過程とその結末を詳しく知ることができます。

激動の時代が生みだす巨大なエネルギーのひとつの形が暗殺や討ち入りという行動であり、そしてそこから生まれるドラマもやはりエネルギーに満ちています。著者は「暗殺や討ち入りなどは絶対に許されないことだ」と言っていますが、やはり歴史が生み出すドラマというものは本当におもしろいと思います。

なお、個人的に特におもしろいと思ったのが、若き日の伊藤博文と井上馨を描いた「死んでも死なぬ」でした。後に明治政府の重職を務めた二人なので重厚な青年時代をイメージしますが、それを全く感じさせない若さと勢いから来る"生命力"があり、そのギャップがとてもおもしろかったです。

本作は、司馬作品特有の激動の時代が生み出すドラマを味わえる名作だと思います。あまりメジャーな作品ではありませんが一読の価値有りです。

幕末の刺客の列伝。小説というよりはノンフィクションに近い印象。50-60年代のモダンジャズのような香りがする。あるいはブロニー版フィルムで撮ったモノクロ写真のよう。それぞれの短編の主人公がその標的を暗殺しなければならない必然性はいつのまにかどこかに行ってしまい、幕末のドロリとした、熱病に感染してしまったような熱く冷たい雰囲気が読み応えある。古代ペルシャでは刺客にハシッシという麻薬を与え続けておいてから暗殺を命じ、使命を終えて再び戻ってくるまで、麻薬を取り上げる暗殺教団があったが、この時代の麻薬は何だったのだろうか。

幕末に起きた暗殺事件を描いた短編集。暗殺する者、される者、逃げる者などなど主人公はさまざま。こうした人物の生活や精神状態が細かく描かれており、暗殺する過程、される過程、暗殺から逃げる過程が手に取るように分かる。また、桜田門外の変から維新前夜までをカバーしているので、「天下のために死なねばらないない」という精神で暗殺を決行した幕末初期の暗殺者から、功名や金のために活動するその後の亜流暗殺者まで、垣間見ることができる。著者のあとがきが短いながらもなかなかに味がある。「書き終わって、暗殺者という者が歴史に寄与したかどうかを考えてみた。ない。ただ、（以下省略）」情報が限られていてまったく先行きの見えない政治情勢の中で、暗殺はトップダウンに実行されるだけでなく、その「暗いエネルギー」がどう自ら沸き上がるのかが見えるのもこの本の興味深いところ。
