高田屋嘉兵衛の人物については五巻までで十分理解できていたつもりでした。
ところが、彼は凄すぎる人でした。
ロシア側の捕虜になってからも、国を代表して交渉する役目を自分に課して
いくのでした。
気になった言葉です。
◆「わしはこの船の船頭だ。」と、すわりなおしてから、しずかに言った。
　（略）言葉こそわからなかったが、ロシア人たちもその態度を見て、
　―やはり、この男が船長だったのだ。と思ったらしい。
◆人間というものは、特別の例をのぞいて、その属する社会に住みたがる。
◆最悪の状況下でみずから私的に外交を買って出ようという、
いわば自分自身の存在、立場、運命をみずから転換させたことは、異常な
ほどに聡明で、何よりもはちきれるような陽気な精神といってよい。
◆嘉兵衛にすれば、この運命について、恨んだり、ひがんだりすることから
自分を解放し、むしろ陽気にうけ容れたいと思っている。
◆日本だけが鎖国していても、結局は押入れに頭を突っ込んで、
尻だけを世界中に曝しているようなものではないか。
◆―国家も、商売である。
◆―身分のある人というのは、いつも農民に対して白ばっくれているか、
それともうそをついているか、どちらかだ。
◆ただ二人の間に成立した信頼だけが、両国を戦争から救った事になる。
◆―わしの人間をみろ。透きとおっているだろう。
◆（みな、国内をみているだけなのだ。）と思った。
　ロシアにすげなくすることが、日本の勇ましさであると彼らは思っている。
◆人間は、物理的に押しこめられて孤立した場合、
飢えや渇きと同じレベルで自分の状況についてささいなことでも知りたく
　なる。
　日常のムラを追い出され海の上で暮らすようになった加平衛が、
ロシアと日本との間にはいり交渉の橋渡し役を果たしました。
　日本のムラ社会は今も根強く存在しています。
自分が果たすべき役割をしっかりと見つめるための書となりました。

感動の最終巻。
嘉兵衛はカムチャツカへ行く。
拉致したのはリコルドという若いロシア軍人。

嘉兵衛にとっては加害者であるリコルド。
リコルドにとっては外交カードである嘉兵衛。

そんな中、お互いに奇妙な尊敬と信頼が生まれて行く。
嘉兵衛は捕虜としての立場を飛び越えて日露外交の打開をはかろうとし、
リコルドはロシア軍人としての立場を越えて嘉兵衛を信頼しようとする。

2人の行動は今日的感覚ならば越権に等しい。
しかしそれはやがて国境を越えたひとつの唱和に収束する。

その魂からの唱和はいかなるものであったか。
ぜひとも読んで貰いたい。

これを書いていても泣ける。

　高田屋嘉平とリコルドが一晩中船上で語らうシーン。筆者がここで終えてもいいというシーン。ここにこの本の良さが凝縮されている。心がすっきり洗われる思いがする。
