~ここに来て大脱線があります。
51ページから370ページまでの間、つまりは最初と最後以外、
本作の主人公である高田屋嘉兵衛が出てこないのです。

その間描かれるのは、
嘉兵衛が心魂を傾けている蝦夷地から日本（の鎖国）を脅かす
ロシアのその当時までの歴史です。
もちろん、単なる脱線ではなく、なぜロシアが北方に固執するのか、
そして嘉兵衛が連~~れ去れた後のロシア社会の気質などを理解するためには
どこかで触れておくべき事項ではあるのでしょう。

『坂の上の雲』でも描かれたように、日本とロシアの関係というのは
もちろん国境を接している隣国ということもあるし、
それ以上に南下(拡張)志向があるという意味において重要な存在である、
ということが分かります。~

この巻の評価だけからい。
1〜4までの評価は1に記してある。

途中で挫折する人もあるいは出ると思う。
全体の物語の中で、嘉兵衛が巻き込まれる状況について、るる述べている。
主にロシア側の事情である。

ここが押さえられないと6巻での感動も半分に違いないが、しかし長すぎる。
半ばロシア史の紐解き。

まだしも慰めとなるのは、この坂を登りきれば実によき景観が開けるということ。
現在進行形で読んでいる方には、高台に上るための峠と思って進んで貰いたい。

放棄するのは勿体ないですよ。

読み進むのに、時間がかかった。一ページ毎に思いをめぐらし、立ち止まっては進み、という状態に陥った。
元和堰武という２００年に及ぶ武力の放棄。大平の時代。世界が分からない幕府。
時代は１５０年程前のものであるが、今も似たような気がする。元来日本人というのは、イジメは好きだが、戦が嫌いな民族のようにも思える。
