日本という国も、そこに住んでいる日本人も、なんて素晴らしいんだと思わずにはいられなかった。
本当の日本人は、あごを上げ、背筋を伸ばし、自分の生きる道をまっすぐと見据えて生きることができる。
調子に乗りやすいところがたまに傷かもしれないが、それでも日本人の芯はとてもかっこいいのだと思った。

他の国と同じように主張ができ、協調性も持っている。
今は目隠しをされている状態だけど、武士道という、世界に誇れる精神も持っている。
私達は各自がもっと胸を張って生きていいし、日本人として、誇りを持って日本を動かしていけるのではないだろうか。
そんな気持ちになった。

なぜそんなふうになれるのか想像もできないが、
登場する日本人が共通して持つ「日本を守るのため」という決死の覚悟にも、心を揺さぶられる。

維新により藩制度が消え、日本人vs日本人の形が「日本」という一つの国に。
そして国vs国の現在から、今度は、地球というひとつのまとまりになるんだろうか、なんて思った。

　満州にいる陸軍はかろうじて奉天会戦でロシア軍を退け、「勝った」というかたちをとることに成功した。しかし、それからの外交政策に賭ける、大山、児玉の満州軍首脳たちの願いもむなしく、戦いはロシア海軍率いるバルチック艦隊との日本海海戦に全てが委ねられることになった。日本だけでなく世界がその行方を見守るなか、5月27日運命の火蓋が切って落とされた。東郷平八郎率いる連合艦隊が、秋山真之の戦略で万全の体制を敷きこれを迎えた。幕末、多くの志士が命を落として明治維新を成立せしめ、初めて人々が「日本人」ということを自覚し、国のために尽くしたすべてがこの日のためにあった。明治の「日本人」がどのように生きたかを我々に語りかける感動の完結編。

「本日天気晴朗ナレドモ波高シ」

明治日本のハイライトである。
特に7、8巻を読んでいるときはアドレナリンの分泌がとまらず、電車の中では平静を装うのに苦労した。

当時、国力・経済力などあらゆる観点から見劣りする小国日本が大国ロシアを退けたのは魔法でも奇跡でもない。
・・弱者の側に立った日本が強者に勝つために、弱者の特権である考え抜くことを行い、さらにその考えを思いつきにせず、それをもって全艦隊を機能化した・・
この一文にそのエッセンスが表れている。

経財相の「もはや経済一流ではない。」という言葉が記憶に新しいが、もはや一流でないがゆえに努力し考え抜くという特権をじつは我々は同時に手にしている。どんな苦しい状況であっても、我々が考え抜き、実行できる人間であることをこの本の著者は教えてくれている。

もっとも重要なことではあるが、戦争のむなしさも十分に教えてくれている。
