秋山好古率いる騎兵隊の奮戦に始まる第６巻は、明石元二郎という新たなキャラクターが登場し、スパイ小説のような舞台設定で革命前夜のロシアが語られる。歴史の表舞台には登場しない明石と言う人物はとぼけた風貌で大仕事をやってのけ、どことなく刑事コロンボを思わせる｡著者は彼の業績を称えつつも、歴史の流れのなせる技として誉めすぎることなく伝えようとしている｡

その後の章は、次のクライマックスに備える日本軍やバルチック艦隊の描写だが、軍楽隊の話や艦上の射撃訓練の様子など「余談」も盛りだくさんで、大変興味深く読んだ｡

せまるバルチック艦隊、落ちない旅順、児玉や乃木の心労、
後の日本軍崩壊の遠因となった「情報軽視」が露骨に出て、
崩壊寸前となった黒溝台。

６巻の注目舞台はこの辺でしょうか？

黒溝台のくだりで、末端の一人一人の兵士の奮闘にスポットが
あたるのが興味深い。
弘前出身の兵たちが、息が凍るような寒さの中、日本軍崩壊を

止めるために奮闘し、前進する。

彼らの中には「八甲田山」エピソードで有名な連隊の兵もいる
のだが、死の寸前、寒さに遠のく意識の中でも
銃を手放さずに戦う姿の点描は自分の中ではこの作品の白眉のひとつ。

国同士が国民の血を流し合って戦う意義もまた考える必要があるが、
この犠牲のうえに日本が成り立っている、ということを

もっと教育で伝えた方がいい、と考えるのは
自分だけではないと思う。

大好きな兄を１１歳で失った曾祖母の気持ちを思う時、涙を無くして読む事ができませんでした。

生前、私に「あんたはいい時に生まれてきた。戦が無いけん」と曾祖母によく言われました。ロシアには勝ちましたが、その中で「一将功なりて万骨枯る」の惨憺たる状況の果ての勝利を「忘れるべきではありません。」曾祖母９３歳、私が１７歳のとき曾祖母は亡くなりました。

今の日本人は、日露戦争を過去の出来事、歴史の教科書の「紙切れの中」の話のように語ります。しかし、死んでいったのは、偶々私達より少しばかり生まれたばかりに死地へ赴いた「同じ日本人だ」ということを忘れてはならないと思います。決してそのことは忘れてはならないと。１９０４年２月１０日開戦。１００年前の出来事なのですが。

坂の上の雲の先に何があったのか？何を求めるべきだったのか？そして
今、今が幸せなのか？考えさせられる事ばかりです。明治の日本人と今の日本人とが同じ日本人とは思えません。
