池田屋ノ変、蛤御門ノ変と血なまぐさい事件が続き、時勢は急速に緊迫する。しかし幕府の屋台骨はゆるんだようにも見えない。まだ時期が早すぎるのだ…次々死んでゆく同志を想い、竜馬は暗涙にむせんだ。竜馬も窮迫した。心血を注いだ神戸海軍塾が幕府の手で解散させられてしまい、かれの壮大な計画も無に帰してしまった。

池田屋の変、蛤御門の変と血なまぐささが増すが竜馬の現実的思想はより冷徹さを増してゆく。
激動する長州に潜入し若々しい猛々しさで報告する中島作太郎に「死を賛美するな。土佐っぽは死を急ぎすぎる。これからの時勢はもはや決死剽悍の暴漢だけでは間に合わぬ。土佐っぽの落ち着きの無さをいい加減捨てよ」と説き、逃げた桂を「さすがだな、逃げることを知っている」と評す。
西郷、大久保による薩摩藩の手練手管の外交術は観念主義一辺倒の長州を赤子の手を捻るかのように駆逐していく。
司馬遼太郎をして「革命のために生まれた男」と評された高杉晋作も面白い。「ほかのどの世でもこの男は役に立たない、乱世の革命時にのみ光る」高杉の天才と言われる所以が随所に溢れている。
五巻に入りそれぞれの人物が一気に加速し動き出し接触しだす。
坂竜飛騰。縦横無尽に志士たちが飛騰する。

池田屋の変、蛤御門の変と血で血を洗う維新の歴史がいよいよ本格的に動き出している。
そんな中で、竜馬は西郷隆盛と出会い、いよいよ幕末の英雄たちが顔を揃えたといって
よいだろう。
歴史が動き出す瞬間がこの巻にあるといってよいだろう。

　「するめが大砲になる話をごぞんじか」
　竜馬が薩摩藩邸で、西郷隆盛、小松帯刀に貿易の重要さを説いていいるセリフの冒頭の部分です。
　この部分を初めて読んだときは「竜馬は何を言っているんだ？する
めが大砲になるわけがないだろう！」と思いましたが、その後のセリフを読んで、「なるほど！」と
納得しました。貿易を巧みに利用すれば、するめが、大砲や軍艦になるということだったのです。

　「百の空論よりも、一のするめが肝要である」

　竜馬の考えと、他の志士の考え方の違いはこのセリフに象徴されていると思います。
