それにしてもこの時代の志士達は尋常な神経ではやっていけない。
真剣で斬られる局面を幾度も切り抜けてきたものだけが幕末後の明治という世を見ることが出来た。
竜馬も例外でなく結局は斬られてしまうのだが、それまでに何度斬りすてにされそうになったか、両手でも足りないほどだ。
そりゃ胆力もつくわな。

土佐では、京都での長州失脚すなわち勤王派の勢力ダウンという時勢に変わった瞬間、山内容堂による土佐勤王党の弾圧が始まる。
そして竜馬の盟友、武市半平太は切腹させられる。
観念的な思想にもとづいて動いた武市と、現実的視点のみで動く竜馬との差が結局ここまでひらいてしまった恰好になる。
その点勝海舟という幕僚と竜馬は恐ろしいほどの共通点があった。耳を信じず己の目で見たものから思考する。

4巻でも思わずほろりと来る場面がたくさんあるが中でも、法螺と馬鹿にされても軍艦を手に入れるといい続けた竜馬がやっと本当に軍艦を一隻手にしたときの描写は笑いながら泣かせられる。陸奥とのやりとりも漫才のようで面白い。

「俺には仕事があって、生死などはない」は素晴らしい一言。
司馬さんの竜馬評も楽しい。
「竜馬ほどおしゃれな男はまずすくない。ただおしゃれの才能が皆無なだけで、その気分は満々とあるのである」思わず声をあげて笑ってしまった。

「あの男は斬れませんよ。」

とは新撰組の沖田総司が土方歳三に言った言葉。
竜馬が新撰組と狭い露地で対面した時のこと。

「死なぬような生き方をしたい」と言った竜馬を、時代が必要としていることを感じたひとコマでした。

まるでマジックのように一日で長州が京から追われ、いよいよきな臭さが漂い始めた第四巻。

幕末へ。

読み応えがあった。

「天が血の犠牲を求めている」と、竜馬。

その犠牲になった竜馬の親友、武市半平太。
彼が生き続けていた明治を見てみたかったと思った。

そしてこの巻の特徴は、作者司馬遼太郎さんの私的意見が随所に見られるところ。
武士とは。切腹とは。そして明治維新とは。

とかく、読み応えがあった。

明治維新では主役となり、その後の明治政府でも閣僚に名を連ねる長州藩出身の人物達。

その長州藩も明治維新初期では、徹底的な屈辱を味わいます。過激な言動の目立つ堂藩への反感が高まりつつある中、政治巧者の薩摩が朝廷をうまく動かし、長州をつまはじきにする。

ここからかの有名な長州征伐がはじまり、長州の没落がはじまります。

この巻での竜馬の活躍は神戸海軍塾ですが、私にとってはそれよりも、この薩摩、長州2台藩の動きが面白かったです。色恋話も竜馬らしさがよく現れていて面白いんですけどね。
