この本が初めて出たとき、日本中が元気になったといわれた本である。
小生の先輩などは、自分の経営する店に入れ替わり立ち替わり来るバイトの子に
未だに読ませているほどである。

司馬遼太郎自身が、この小説の中で「書いているうちに竜馬が好きになってしまった」といっているが、
本当にここに描かれる竜馬は、魅力に満ちあふれている。

「寺の鐘みたいだ、大きく打てば大きく鳴り、小さく打てば小さく鳴る」と、
竜馬がその人物を評して勝海舟を喜ばせた、西郷隆盛。

幕末、その西郷隆盛が竜馬に維新後の閣僚名簿の作成を依頼したが、
竜馬が完成させた名簿には彼自身の名前がなく、西郷が「おはんの名前がごわせんな」
という場面は有名だ。
西郷に答えた竜馬のセリフが素晴らしい。「おれは世界の海援隊をやるぜよ」

明治維新の悲劇は、一流の人材が維新までに死去してしまったところにある。
そのあたりに、維新後の西郷の不思議な行動の原因があるのかもしれないと常々考えている。

日本も世界も行き詰まった。
今こそ、坂本竜馬のような人材が求められている時代はない。

『燃えよ剣』『峠』と並ぶ、司馬幕末小説３トップの一角。
自身の生き方、新選組の在り方を「刀」に例え、そこに見出す美学の為に戦い抜いた『燃えよ剣』の土方歳三。
封建制の弊害を知り抜き、武士社会の終焉を見通しながら、長岡藩士であり家老であるという立場を踏み外さなかった『峠』の河井継之助。
本作『竜馬がゆく』の坂本竜馬が彼ら二人と大きく異なると感じるのは、自身の器というものを明確に把握していなかった点かと思う。
自分がどういう人間であるか、何が出来るのかを模索し続け、「立場」からも脱却し、さらにその広がった視野から自分が為すべきことを考える。

自分がどう生きるかをなかなか見出せない現代。
『竜馬がゆく』は再び世に望まれる作品になってきたように思います。
読み出しさえすれば、あっという間の全八巻。
ページ数、巻数に気圧されることなく、是非読んでいただきたい。

私は活字中毒で、年中何らかの小説を片手に抱えています。
年間何十冊と本を読んでいると、読んだことすら忘れてしまう作品もあります。
その中で、強烈に心に残っている小説のひとつがこの”竜馬がゆく”です。

文句なしの名作で、よの男子はすべて読んで欲しいくらい熱くポジティブな作品であります。
幕末と言う、価値観がひっくり返る時代に生きながら、常に前を見、
時代を変えてゆくパワ−には、100年以上を超え、文章から力をもらえます。
バブル以前の常識がひっくり返った今、このころに世情が似ているのかもしれません。
そんな今だからこそ、竜馬の純粋でパワフルな生き方が必要なのでは？

竜馬が暗殺されるシ−ンでは、作者すら描くのをためらっているようで、その魅力は読んでいる間中魅せられ続けます。

息子もコレを読む日がやってくるでしょう！そのときは二人で竜馬談義に話を咲かせてみたいものです。
