私にとっての初めての司馬遼太郎作品です。
同作者の歴史物語を読んでみたかったのですが、
｢竜馬がゆく｣を初めから読むのは自信がなかったので、
知人からの推薦もあり、この作品を手に取りました。
星5つの評価どおり、話の展開が速く、ストーリー構成もしっかりしている。
歴史上の人物を｢友達｣と呼んでいる作者だけあって、
幕末を生きた人間たちを実に生き生きと描写してくれています。
日本史に疎い私でしたが、この本をきっかけに江戸時代から幕末の歴史が大好きになりました。
司馬遼太郎・歴史物語の入門としてどうぞ。

天堂晋助という架空の長州人を幕末に登場させた物語。高杉晋作と知り合い、その命を受けて京都に潜伏、暗殺計画を進めていく過程は、まるで実在の長州人を描いているよう。下巻は、京都潜伏を経て長州へ戻り、幕府の長州征伐にて暴れる設定。高杉晋作の指揮の下、伊藤、井上、山県といった明治の元老達の若かりしころが生き生きと描かれている。

昭和40年、司馬42歳の時に週刊文春に連載された小説である。

主人公天堂晋助は架空の人物で、生まれは長州、家系は宮本武蔵につらなる二刀流の剣客という設定。ひょんな出逢いから高杉晋作の薫陶を受け、その命を受けて、小栗上野介の暗殺を狙う。その旅すがら、桂小五郎、勝海舟、西郷隆盛、坂本竜馬らと出会い、新撰組の土方歳三につけねらわれる・・・とまあ、幕末オールスターキャストといったふうの娯楽小説である。

大作「竜馬がゆく」の連載が終わる頃であり、幕末の歴史の中に、自ら創作した人物を放り込んで自在に泳がせてみることで、司馬自身、幕末に参加してみたかったのかもしれない。そういう茶目っ気を感じる小説である。

体裁はいつもの解説つき史伝小説スタイルをとってはいるが、主人公が実在の人物でないため、例えば坂本竜馬との会話や、勝海舟との会話もどこかぎこちなく迫力に欠ける。一方で脇役に実在の人物が多数登場するため、幻想小説ほどの不思議な味わいもない。小説としてのおもしろさという点においては、やや他の作品に及ばぬかもしれない。
