私にとっての初めての司馬遼太郎作品です。
同作者の歴史物語を読んでみたかったのですが、
｢竜馬がゆく｣を初めから読むのは自信がなかったので、
知人からの推薦もあり、この作品を手に取りました。
星5つの評価どおり、話の展開が速く、ストーリー構成もしっかりしている。
歴史上の人物を｢友達｣と呼んでいる作者だけあって、
幕末を生きた人間たちを実に生き生きと描写してくれています。
日本史に疎い私でしたが、この本をきっかけに江戸時代から幕末の歴史が大好きになりました。
司馬遼太郎・歴史物語の入門としてどうぞ。

天堂晋助という架空の長州人を幕末に登場させた物語。高杉晋作と知り合い、その命を受けて京都に潜伏、暗殺計画を進めていく過程は、まるで実在の長州人を描いているよう。蛤御門の変後に、桂小五郎に頼まれて唯一の長州人として京都に残り、新撰組はじめ幕府側から執拗に狙われ、西郷隆盛や勝海舟と出会い。。。という展開。倒幕、幕府両側の要人と出会いながら、幕府側からぎりぎりのところで（しかし鮮やかさも残しつつ）逃げまくるのは緊迫感大。蛤御門の変後の京都の様子が非常によく分かる。

初めに言っておかなければならないが、この本はフィクションである。
長州に天堂晋助なる男は実在しない。
作者のつくりあげた架空の人物である。
だが、だからといって読まないのは如何なものか。
ぜひチャンバラが好きな人には読んでほしい。
あの宮本武蔵の二天一流を流儀とする天堂が、襲いかかる敵をなぎ倒していく様は、大変気持ちがよい。

ちなみに、悪役は幕府である。
だから、長州が嫌いな方は読む前に注意したほうがいいかもしれない。
もし、長州のことが知りたいというのなら、楽しめながら読むことができるのでお勧めする。
