この作者の本は、ほとんどはずれがなさそうなのですが、
それでも、本書はタイトルから予想される以上に良書の趣があります。

テンポの良い文書、アイロニーが勝ったユーモア、にじみ出る古典への造詣、などなど。

取り上げられた１０人の文章家は、少年ジャンプの黄金期を体験した世代からすると、
多少時代がかってみえます。それでも、学校の授業で習ったのではないかと思しき面々が
並んでいます。

本書の最大の特徴は、登場した文章家のキャラができすぎていること。きっと実際以上に。
例えば…、とりつくしまのない英才、新井白石。偏屈なのか理詰めなのか変転極まりない、
本居宣長。機動力のあるジャーナリスト、内藤湖南。神経強迫症寸前の夏目漱石…。

その中でも、極めつけは、斎藤茂吉。でそうででないくしゃみの様なおかしみのある人な
のかあるいは作者の力量がそう思わせるのか、にわかには判然としえません。

名文について書かれた文章は名文なのか、本書はそんなことも考えさせる魅力があります。

毎度のことながら、高島俊男さんの本は、面白くてためになる。今回は「初めての、しゃべってつくった本」ということで、少し読み勝手が悪い気もするが、あくまで高島流の文章ではある。
サブタイトルにあるように、高島さんの好きな10人の文章家について書かれてあるが、メインタイトルからイメージされる、名文を抜き出してそこに解説を加えた本ではない。
新井白石から斎藤茂吉まで10人、あまり興味のない人もいたが、本書を読み終えて、どの人についても興味がもてた。
人類はみな日本の目下であるといった本居宣長、自分をとりまく人々の期待に生涯をかけてすべて応えた森鴎外、天下の悪妻といわれた妻をもった夏目漱石、「好きなもの　苺　珈琲　花　美人　懐手して宇宙見物」とよんだ寺田寅彦などなど。
津田左右吉は以前から面白い文章を書く人だなと思っていたが、ますます好きになった。
どの人の書くものも現代の文体ではないので、読みづらいだろうとは思うが、機会があれば、どの人の文もじっくり読んでみたい。そんなことを思わせる本。
