牡蠣の生産者が書いたエッセイというところが気になって買ってみた。昭和っぽさといおうか、地方出版的といおうか、ある種のあかぬけなさは感じるのものの、ずいぶんと達者な文章を書くひとである。それもそのはず。検索したら結構著作がある。半ばエッセイストみたいなところもあるひとらしい。
エッセイと名乗ってはいるものの、第2章の宮城新昌の話しなんかは、牡蠣養殖の黎明期についての歴史読み物の趣もあって読み応えがある。続く第3章では、フランス、中国、タスマニアへと空間的な拡がりをみせて飽きさせない。この、時間的、空間的な拡がりが牡蠣というひとつのものを追い求めた結果、ってというところが頼もしい。

今期、牡蠣は被害者だった。被害は消費者の無知によるもの。メディアもきちんと取り扱わなかった。真の牡蠣好きは、本書を手にとりその奥深さを知り、ぜひ宮城から三陸への旅に出かけて欲しいと思う。日本の牡蠣産業がいかに世界の牡蠣を救っているかもよくわかる。

　宮城･舞根湾で牡蠣養殖業を営む著者のエッセー。著者の豊富なフィールドワークに基づく情報が満載です。何でも本書の完成に３年かかったそうです。
　本書には牡蠣にまつわる話が多く取り上げてあります。その中で印象的なのが、三陸を含めた日本の牡蠣が世界を救ったということです。例えば昭和40年代、フランスで牡蠣が壊滅したことがあり、日本（三陸）の種牡蠣を送り、成功したという歴史について記述があり、新鮮に感じました。
　次に牡蠣の主食であるプランクトンは、何を隠そう山の針葉樹林がもとで川を流れて河口についたものであるということで、ダイナミックな話だと感じずにはおれません。牡蠣を育てるからといって、海だけを眺めるのではなく、なぜか・なぜか・と突き詰めてゆくことで山を見るという重大な発見があるというのが、印象に残りました。
　最後に、著者のフィールドワークの素晴らしさです。情報を得るには人に会って、実際に自分の目で確かめて、という地道な作業が著者の膨大な知識の蓄積につながっていると感じました。なので、著者は現地に行くと、なぜかとんとん拍子に所望の情報が入手できてしまうのです。もうすこし、泥臭いところがあってもいいのではないか、と思うくらいに、状況がいい方向にめぐるのです。この点は、著者のフィールドワークが効率的であり、うまい具合に経験的な勘が働いていると思います。足を運ぶことの大切さがよくわかりました。間違いなく良書と思います。
