　即効性のある、犬のしつけ方を期待して買うと、少し肩すかし、かもしれません。「YESを教える」、「グッドを作る」など、第１章「犬を知るための５つの法則」に書かれてあることは、大変参考になりますが、実際に自分ちの犬に活用しようとすると、なかなか難しい。自分なりに消化してアレンジすることが必要なように思います。それだけ、それぞれの犬には性格や多様性もあるということなのでしょうけど。
　第２章「私はなぜ盲導犬を育成するのか」で描かれる、盲導犬ユーザーや外国の訓練センターのスタッフの方達との会話などは、いろいろと考えさせられるところがあり、むしろ読みものとしての方が興味深いかもしれません。
　まぁ、犬好きの人なら、第３章の「バーティ日記」の写真を見るだけで、癒されてしまうことでしょう。新書版としてのコスト・パフォーマンスからすると、十分お買い得です。

著者は盲導犬クイールの訓練士です。過去にたくさんの盲導犬を訓練してきた多和田さんが、犬との接し方を伝授してくれます。前半の「犬を知るための５つの法則」は端的でとてもわかりやすく、説得力があります。犬と一緒に暮らしていて、つい「ダメ！」「NO!」を連発している自分を恥ずかしく思いました。犬は一緒にいて楽しい人が好き。この言葉を肝に銘じたいと思います。

後半は著者が盲導犬訓練を通して感じていることや、視覚障害者と犬の関係、かかわり方、人生観などが率直に語られていて考えさせられる部分が多かったです。愛犬たちのスナップ写真で癒されました。

犬の躾で悩みいろんな本を読みあさりどれを実行していいのか頭でっかちになって訳がわからなくなってました。この本を読んで、わんこをまずそのまま受け止めて、人にとって好ましくない行動はする前に褒める行動にかえればいいんだ。と、とっても気が楽になりました。最初のほうの、犬を知るための5つの法則、は今まで知りたかったけど行動学の本では難しすぎてわからなかったことがとてもよくわかりました。躾は情熱ではないいことも・・・後半の文章は多和田さんの暖かい人柄が伝わってきてやさしくて癒されました。最後のブログ形式の日記もとても暖かかったです。
カリスマ訓練士で有名な多和田さんなのですが愛が根底にあってすべてに接していらっしゃるんだなぁとつくづく感じた本でした。
