「裸のサル」の翻訳で知られる先生（ちょっと古い？）が、ついに事の本質に手を付けた、という感じの本。

人間の成長のプログラムを、入学式の式次第のたとえたりするのが、著者独特の表現でわかりやすく面白い。
ウグイスのさえずりの話、小学生が描いたアリの絵の話、遺伝についての誤解から教育の現場も混乱しているという指摘なども興味深いです。

やさしい語り口ながら、子どもの成長と「もって生まれた性質」という、非常にデリケートなテーマだけに、慎重な配慮も感じられます。
たぶん著者としては、「まずは遺伝に決まってるよ」というのが実は本音なのではないかと思いますが、それを言っちゃあおしまいよ、というところもあって、それから、人間の「努力」と「教育」への敬意と信頼もあって、環境も重視した教育論として一冊にまとめた、ということじゃないでしょうか。
といっても決して姑息さを感じさせない、真摯で前向きな気持ちよい本だと思います。

　人間個人の性格や個性などを決定付けるのは遺伝なのか、環境なのか。専門家でも意見が分かれる大問題だが、本書の立場は中立。中立といっても煮え切らない、中途半端な主張ではない。ちゃんと様々な学説、動物実験での論証などを例に取り、理路整然と展開している。「目からウロコ」的な検証なども豊富に述べられていて大変面白いが、要するに複雑すぎてよく検証できない問題らしい。
　この本をたたき台に、このテの議論が好きな仲間と喧々諤々論争するのもおもしろい。

人間は遺伝か環境か？
その答えは、
両方。
この本によると、大枠は遺伝で、その具体化のされ方が環境によって変わるのだということ。
当たり前といえば当たり前の答えだと思う。

そして本書は、科学的な根拠を盾にとった教育論、のようでもある。
その要旨は簡単に言うと、
人間は集団で生きる生き物だから、できるだけたくさんの人の中でいろんな影響を受けながら成長するのがいいんだ、ということだと思う。

大学生のころだったら、このようなテーマの本がだいすきだったけど、今はそれほどでもない。
自分を決めるのが遺伝なのか環境なのかというような問いは、
遺伝であろうが環境であろうが自分は自分だ、
というような感覚が自分の中でできてくるにしたがって、どうでもよいものになってきた気がする。
