久米邦武の欧米回覧実記。
ヴェルヌの八十日間世界一周。
２つの異なる世界一周にまつわる話を中心に展開されている部分は理解できた。
後の話が、どういう構成で、どういう意図で出てきているかがよくわからなかった。

自分では、北米、南米、ヨーロッパ、アフリカ、アジア、オーストラリアを訪問したことがある。
世界一周を連続したことがないので、分からないだけなのかもしれない。

新幹線の中で一気に読んだ。時速270キロで猛進する車中から、19世紀中葉、地球一周の制覇にのりだした蒸気船の旅に思いを馳せるという、奇妙なずれを楽しみながら。本書はグローバル化現象の起源を交通史の観点からみごとに解き明かしてみせた逸作である。様々なグローバリズム論が巷にあふれ返っている中で、「地球が丸くなった瞬間」を航路と鉄道の発展、そして要人の紀行文から跡づけるという発想は、意外と少ないのではないか。本書のすごさは、その着想のユニークさだけではない。19世紀以降の植民地主義、帝国主義、さらには西洋中心主義の展開を理解する上で、きわめて有益な一つの見取り図をも提供しているのだ。それにしても、世界一周の誕生は、結局は大英帝国と、西と東に海を擁する両岸国家アメ!リカとの熾烈な競争の産物であった。形を変えつつも今もって益々健在なアングロ・サクソン・オーソドクシーの行方は・・・？

私は仕事柄、海外へ行く機会が多いのですが、「丸い地球｣が出来上がっていくプロセスが、旅行記や小説や、さまざまなエピソードで書かれており、興味が尽きなかった。この本を私は飛行機に中で読んだのですが、汽車や蒸気船の時代も、現代に共通する問題がすでに出てきていたことを知らされ、歴史と現在とのつながりの二つを同時に教わることが出来て本当に良かった。旅行好きに人には、必読書のような気がする。
