語源を利用した単語集は多く出版されていますが、この本は新書で値段も格安で、単語集というよりは、気楽にページをめくる読み物といった趣向のものです。

著者によれば、大学入試に頻出する約６０００語のうち約９割が語源のはっきりした単語で、しかも全体の８割は１００の語源で整理することができるそうです。その１００の語源を憶えれば、中級レベルの英単語の記憶に役立てることができると主張しています。本書において実際に１００の語源で様々な英単語が整理されています。

一例を掲げますと、印欧語の語源 pa（食べ物）から、ラテン語の pater（父親）が生まれ、さらに patron（後継者）, patronage（支援）, patriot（愛国者）, patrotism（愛国主義）, pattern（父がみせた手本、パターン）あるいは company 一緒にパンを食べる仲間、仲間にする）がうまれ、語源の pa が pas に変化して pasture（牧場、放牧する）, paste（粉をこねたもの）が生じ、さらに p が f になる英語のグリムの法則によって pa が fa, fe, fo という音形になり father（父）, feed（食べさせる）, food（食べ物）, foster（養う、食べさせる）などが生まれたと解説されています。

このように、いろいろな単語がどういう過程で成立したのか、語源のうんちくを楽しみながら、いつのまにか語源を中心とした英単語の増強を図れる本です。

ラテン語、印欧語、ドイツ語、フランス語など、複数の言語が混じり合ってできた言葉である英語。英語の単語がどのようにできたか、語源となった単語はどういう意味かを詳しく解説してある。

しかし、ひたすら同じ形式で書き続けられているため長時間読むと飽きてくる。そして、縦書きの文章であるため英単語が非常に読みづらい。

著者の自己満足でなく、英単語を覚えることを前提に本を書いたのであったのなら、横書きにするべきであったと思う。

はじめてこの本を手にしたときは、難しいな~、もっと単語帳っぽい方がいいな、と思い止めてしまいました｡が　ある程度語源の基礎が身に付いてきてから再度読んだのですが、以前とは比べ物にならないくらい読みやすく感じました｡むしろ納得のいく説明でその語源の背景経緯が載っているので、語源のみが載っているものよりも身に付いていってます。復習はしづらいので蛍光ペンで単語と意味の部分だけマークして使ってます。語源とイラストで~みたいな良心的な本である程度語源に触れたら是非読んでみてください。
