　この本は、私が初めてふれた植村直己作品です。

　世界的な冒険家として名を馳せている植村さんが、各地から奥様に送られたお手紙をまとめた本です。
　過酷な冒険を成すその裏側で、奥様だけに見せる人間らしい弱さ、そして強さに裏づけされた優しさが、随所に滲んでいます。

　その純粋で素直なお手紙の内容は、読んでいて、時に微笑みをさそいます。　そして最後には、女性としてこのように愛された奥様は、やはりお幸せであったのではないかと思いました。
　数々の植村作品を読まれている方にも、ほかの著書ではみられない氏の一面にふれられる素敵な一冊だと思います。

他人宛の手紙っておもしろいものなのか。最初はどうなのかなと思って、読み出しました。ところが、犬ぞりをしながら手紙を書いている部分、かなりおもしろくって、どんどんハマってしまいました。本では決して書かないような、植村直己さんの本音の部分もたくさんあって、ああ同じ人間だなーみたいな感じがして。公子夫人にしか吐露できない真情ってやつです。植村さん独自の口調が、これまた味があって良いです。巻末にある公子夫人の言葉どおり、確かに、こういう手紙を人に見せられたら、恥ずかしいだろうなって思いました。

　はっきり言って、まるっきり期待しないで手に取ったこの本。予想以上の満足感を与えてくれました。

　内容は、世界各地の冒険の地から妻に当てた手紙を集めたもの。その文面の端々に「私のようなもののために苦労をかけてすまない」という自責にも似た植村氏の思いを感じました。この本を読む前に「極北に駆ける」など、彼の冒険本を読んでいましたが、その著書の中では、悩む姿は描かれていながらも、それは冒険を完遂するための悩みや苦しみであって、手紙での苦しみは、まさに人間・植村としての苦しみであるように思います。
　彼の冒険本を読んだ方は、ぜひ読んでみてください。また違った植村氏の視点が見えることと思います。
