日本のビールに慣れ親しんでいると、
ビールは銘柄による差異がほとんどない、と思う人も多いだろう。
ところが、世界のビールは、実に様々な個性を持っていることを知る。

世界各地を飲み歩いたビールの解説は、
そのビールが生まれた土地の背景も合わせて描かれていて面白い。
旅行記として読んでも、かなり楽しめる。

以前に比べ、外国産ビールは購入しやすくなってきている。
店頭で、外国語のラベルのビールを見かけることも多くなった。
試してみようと思うとき、手元に本書があると楽しみ方が増えそうだ。

まずこの本を手にとって、始まりがロビンソン・クルーソーとは驚いた。なるほど、ロビンソンの人生には、日本人とは比べ物にならないくらいビールは大切なものだった。

ビールの原料の説明、イギリス人の生活とビールの関わりなど「ビールとは何か」で始まり、その後国ごとにビールの説明に入るのだが、とにかく雑学本としてもおもしろい。ビール好きでなくとも引き込まれる。海外旅行をしながらビールのことを調べて回っているような雰囲気で、飽きさせない。

実は私はワインが好きで、ワインエキスパートというものを名乗れる者だが、ワイン好きにとってもとてもおもしろく読めると思う。原料と発酵と味わいの説明は読み応え充分。今ではワインと共に、輸入ビールも探すようになってしまった。（お酒が好きでない人たちにも楽しめると思います）

前半はビールの歴史や製法などを駆け足で紹介。後半はイギリス、ベルギー、ドイツなど、産地ごとに主要銘柄を解説。あまり深い情報は無いよう。安価な文庫本なので通勤電車とかで読むのに最適。
