『パラサイト・イブ』などの小説で知られる著者が、ロボットの世界の今と未来をレポートしたノンフィクション。ロボットの専門家ではない著者が緻密な取材によって書いた作であるからこそ、読者は著者の“噛み砕いたことば”で、ロボティクスの最先端を体験することができる。

　いまさらながら、日本がロボット最先進国であることや、日本人がロボットと親しくしてきた歴史・文化を再認識させられる。作品中にはさまざまなロボットが登場するが、これらのロボットが5年後10年後、どのような活躍を見せているか追っていくのも楽しいかもしれない。

映画『A.I.』が公開，前年にはソニーがパラパラを踊るロボットを公開した，そんな時代に生きているわたしたちにとってロボットは何なんだろう？

ロボットを含めた科学技術は「道具に過ぎない」ということば，それは本当の目的は自分自身に人間は他のものでとって代われないんだと言い聞かせたい多くの人たちにとって，瀬名氏による数々のレポートは心に響くものがある．

なぜなら，技術に必要以上の思い入れを避けながらも「人に似せて作られた」（聖書でお馴染みのフレーズですね）ロボットの登場する必然性をわたしたち人間の立場から読み解いてくれる著者の才能に乾杯したいと思う．

　日本はもともとロボットを仲間意識で受け入れる土壌があり、そういった環境が日本をロボット大国にした。いまさらながら、日本がロボット先進国であることや、日本人がいかにロボットと親しくしてきたかを再認識させられる。

　作品中にはさまざまなロボットが登場するが、これらのロボットが5年後10年後、どのような活躍を見せているか追っていくのも楽しいかもしれない。
