4.0 out of 5 stars 普段何気なく使っている日本語を見直す機会になりました, 2001/8/27
コンピュータは、もともと電子計算機と言われていただけあって、計算するための機械でした。それが、英語(アルファベット)を扱うようになり、そして日本語などの文字種類の多い言語をも扱うようになりました。その間、日本語がどう扱われてきたか、ということが技術者以外にもわかりやすく書かれています。そして、これからコンピュータ上で日本語はどのように扱われるべきなのかを考えさせられました。

どうして文字化けなんて起こるんだろう、どうしてＸＸさんの名前の文字はワープロで出てこないんだろう、なんて疑問を抱かれる方にはお勧めです。

ただ私は、文字を表わすコード（エンコーディング）の種類が多く出てくるので、途中で混乱してしまいました。一覧表を添えるなど、もう少し見やすさが欲しかったと思います。

パソコンを始めると文字化けという現象に出くわすことが必ずありますね。私はプログラマをしていた関係上、バックスラッシュ(/の反対向きのもの)が日本語画面で￥に化けるのに興味がありました。で、その筋の本を探していたら本書に出会ったのです。この本は類書の中ではいちおしです。文字コードに関する技術本というより、文字コードの変遷が詳しく語られていて、関係者にインタビューしている苦労話とか、とにかく、読んでいておもしろいのです。多言語処理でも画面上に表示するだけなら簡単に実現できるみたいですが、これが編集となるとやっかいな問題が山積してます。まず、チベット語やデーヴァナーガリ文字といった言語は単語中の位置で字形が変わるのだそうで、こういう文字は容易にコンピュータで編集できません。将来的に世界中の文字が同一画面で編集できるようになるのが夢ですが、実現には様々な障壁があるのですね。
