多くの読者同様、私は藤原正彦氏のことを「国家の品格」を通して初めて知った。数学者であり、エッセイストである藤原氏が、今の教育や政治に対して、何故ここまで警鐘を鳴らすようになったのか。同氏に非常に興味を持った私は、この本が出版されてすぐ手に取ってみた。
新田次郎氏を父に持った少年時代の思い出、教育論、歴史観等について、ある時は重厚に、ある時は軽快に記されている。それらを通して「日本人であるとはどういうことか」を改めて考えさせられた本である。読み終えた今も、藤原氏から「今の日本が向かっている方向は間違っていないか」と問いかけられているようだ。
あえて難を言えば、本書は様々な新聞、雑誌等に掲載された論評、エッセイを集めたものであるため、一冊の書籍としては一貫性がないことである。それを差し引いても十分に読むに値する書籍である。

英語教育論に納得しました。ぼくも小学校からの英語必修に大反対です。なぜ世間の人はこうも英語、英語と言い、子どもに勉強させたがるのか。藤原さんは言います。「小学校での英語教育を主張する人の大多数は、英語が不得意の人である。自分ができないのを何かのせいにする、というのは人情である」。思わす吹き出しちゃいました。自分が英語ができなかったのは、中学から始めたからで、小学校からやっていればもっとできたはずだ、という論理なんですね。ホントはあまり勉強しなかったからなのにね。

『国家の品格』で突如として有名になられた藤原先生ですが（今まで藤原正彦という人を知らなかった人にも知られるようになったという意味です。藤原先生のエッセイに以前から注目していた人も沢山いました）私は、本書の方を強くお勧めします。『国家の品格』を読んだ際、筆者の言いたいことが、言葉足らずのため誤解されたり、筆者一流の諧謔が単なるふざけととられはしないかと危惧しました。翻って本書では、なぜ筆者が危機感を持っているのか、意識するしないにかかわらず武士道が武士階級のみならず、日本人全体の行動規範となっており、それがどれだけすばらしいのかが述べられています。『国家の品格』を読んで、反発を感じた方も是非こちらも読まれてから、判断してみてください。
