軽くて重く、重くて軽い内容の本書。
村上春樹の本気がギンギンみなぎっている。
小説以外の著作では、確実に「最高傑作」だと断言する。
本書は単なる音楽評論ではない。
村上は以前「本当の自分を伝えるためには自分の好きなモノを語ればよい」と提案したことがある。
彼はその著作で、大好物であるカキフライの素晴らしさを語っていた。
ここではカキフライが、１１人の音楽家である。
もうボリューム満点。
村上春樹によって、村上春樹自身がたっぷりと描かれているのだから。
音楽に興味がないからといって本書を敬遠するのは筋違い。
『村上春樹、自分を語る』というタイトルがふさわしい。
当然ながら村上ファンは必読だ。
彼の小説を読んだことがない読者にとっては、村上春樹という作家を知ることが出来る絶好の著作である。

スタン・ゲッツとウィントン・マルサリスの章が特に印象的。ゲッツの天国的音楽を解説し、一方で秀才マルサリスの音楽がなぜ退屈なのか持論を展開する箇所は面白いし説得力もある。一方、J-POPなどを槍玉にあげて「折衷的な音楽」は好みでないとのことですが、村上小説（あるいは村上ワールド）というのは欧米文学的コンテンツを日本人読者へ展開する「折衷」の最たるものでは？とも思いました（私は村上ファンですが）。

5.0 out of 5 stars 実物を聴いて、ギャップを感じるのも楽しみのひとつ, 2006/2/18
音楽を文章にするとき、作り手の歩んできた道を語る方法と、彼らがつくりあげた作品を語る方法があるわけだけど。後者のアプローチをとるのは、巨大な風車に戦いを挑むようなもので、なかなか成功しない。音楽論はあまたとあれど、作品自体を語って、「へ〜、そうなんだ。ぜひ、聴いてみたい」って思わせるような文章に巡り合ったことがない。そんななか、これは白眉、ホントにおすすめ。
このエッセイ集は作り手の歴史を語りながら、広がりをみせるものの、ヘソとなっているのは、作品についての語り。例えば、シダー・ウォルトンを語る、「鍵盤をびしびしと叩きつけるような勢いで、きわめて解析的に、しかし説得力をもって弾ききってしまう。コードの展開も、決してバップの枠内に安易に収まっていない。しかもそれでいて、本来の歌心は失われていない。媚びたところのない斬新で見事な演奏だ」なんて読むと、ついつい聴いてみたくなるでしょ。前回のポートレイト・イン・ジャズもそうだったけど、実物を聴いてみて、村上さんの感じ方と自分の感じ方を比べて、また楽しむことができるお得な本です。
